Steering Clutch 350C
Steering Clutch 350C
I have a 350 C that I am having problems with the steering clutches. When pushing a load, If I release the steering clutch on either side It won't pick back up when I release the steering lever. If I stop and reengage the load it hooks up. Could the hydraulic pressure from the reverser be to low or am I looking at rebuilding the steering clutches. What should the pressure from the reverser be?

Re: Steering Clutch 350C
Are you saying that both tracks stop when pulling a steering lever or just the side you've pulled? Either way, I would say the problem lies in the steering clutches. Out of adjustment possibly.

Only one track stops when I pull the side related steering lever. When the lever is released that track will not re-engage unless I depress the foot clutch. When I re-engage the foot clutch both tracks engage and pull. I have tried to adjust the steering clutches, perhaps I am not setting it properly. Can you advise?
Re: Steering Clutch 350C
If you have a 350-C, you should see a 2 spool valve under your seat. This valve controls the oil to each steering clutch. Make sure its not leaking , or has loose or binding linkage between it and each lever. When you pull back roughly 1.5 to 2 inches each track should stop, pulling further back past that should start to engage the brake. The eyelets in the valve are adjustable, other than that C clutches are not adjustable like a dry clutch machine. They do work off of reverser pressure, that should be 120 or 150 psi depending on your serial number.

Where do I test the reverser pressure and is it adjustable?
Re: Steering Clutch 350C
The pressure tap is on your reverser control valve (under your floorplates, left side). Should be a 1/8" NPT pipe plug on the top of the housing right above the rotary valve. (You can see it on Jdparts.com under "HYDRAULIC REVERSER ACCUMULATOR HOUSING ASSEMBLY" if you need a clear picture)
If the pressure is low you can add shims under the regulating valve plug, Should be the second plug back on the bottom of the control valve. The service manual (Tm-1115) has really good illustrations/diagrams and directions, if you plan on keeping the crawler that book is priceless! I'd set up a gauge with a hose so you can run the crawler and get the reverser hot while checking your readings.

Re: Steering Clutch 350C
Thank you much. I have the crawler on a piece of property 200 miles from where I live. I will be going to do some more work at the end of September and I will take a gage and hose with me to check the pressure at that time. Your advise to get the TM is also good advice as I do plan on keeping the machine for some time. Thanks again for taking the time to provide much needed support and advice.
