420c steering clutch issue

Post by jeremyhayes » Tue Oct 03, 2017 10:23 am

My grandpa has a 420c crawler that just had both steering clutches rebuilt a few years ago but now any time you pull the left steer lever it pops twice looking through the inspection cover over the left steer clutch you can see the release bearing pop a little crooked each time it pops, looks like it's over running an angled tooth. I'm wondering if this sounds like an adjustment issue or if a part failed? I've compared both sides and the only difference I see is the release bearing is chewed up on the edge closest to the pressure plat like its hitting something when it pops.

Grossly out of adjustment. Go through the full adjustment procedure and it should be cured.

Do I need to get into the housing for any of the needed adjustments? I tried adjust the adjustment bolt right under the cover and also moved the throw out bearing adjustment to see if it changed but didn't seem to help much

Hi,

They are done via the two holes. But, you have to follow the instructions in the service manual *exactly*. Otherwise, you will get nowhere. Fast.

It doesn't look to hard, but it's the unknowns that make me nervous. I'm a big rig mechanic so the tools aren't the issue it's just not knowing the hidden problems that concern me

Unless you can see the sleeve that the throwout bearing moving when you pull the clutch then don't take it apart. Do the top adjustments first. And don't drop any tools in.

Just too follow up, the brake bands were way out which seemed to be the biggest contributor to the problem but ran it all afternoon and it did great thanks again for the help

are these steering clutches close to the same as the ones in a 450c with dry steering clutches.....if so do you have to take steering clutch housing of to remove clutch assembly ?

Hi,

Yes, you do have to drop the track and remove the sprocket to then remove the entire final drive. The clutch pack is inside that along with the brake.
