Acceptable Rail Height?

Post by hydrogeo » Thu Nov 02, 2017 8:00 am

Popping tracks off my 4 roller 40c while skidding is starting to get more than a bit tiresome, so probably need to think about doing something about it. My current rail height is about 2 7/8". There is some pin boss wear, but somebody went through the rollers at some point so I think that's been addressed. Pads are serviceable. The tracks are two bold pads but are industrial yellow so I suspect they are off a 420. Sprockets and one final drive appear to be 420 as well. Standard front idlers.

With a rail height of 2 7/8", is it worth looking at doing pins and bushings, or should I be looking for a complete set of tracks?

Did a search, didn't come up with anything regarding rail height. Maybe my search skills aren't up to par, wouldn't be the first time ambition trumped skill, lol.

Did find the Crawler Heaven wear table here:https://sites.google.com/site/crawlerhe ... ndbushings, but it doesn't have anything on rail height. Does anybody have a newer set of rails they could grab a quick height off?

I just don't want to re-bush my rails if they are 90% shot. Going to try and nurse it through this year's winter logging season and sugaring, and then pull it apart next summer. I'm not sure who has P&Bs for sale, but there is a local heavy equipment guy that a couple contractor buddies have said is pretty good that I can try.

I posted the rail height and other specs. They can be found on the second page of the Faqs questions. These came off of NOS parts.
I assume you know that 40C rails are only the same as later rails in pitch and pad bolt hole spacing. With all the questions about wear limits here lately,
I am scatching my head. There are NO new two bolt rails available so the best you can do is look for a good used 2 bolt set or new 350 rails.New pins and bushings may help but keep I mind you are running the two bolts to destruction.JMHO,Luck,JimAnderson

Thanks! Yeah, understood that rails for two bolt pads are no longer available. I have 12" snow pads with caulks welded on the grousers. Pads are in decent shape and work really well for winter logging. I figured that if the existing rails are 50% or better I'll rebush and run them. If they are less I'll probably keep an eye out for a 350 uc. They seem to be fairly common. I usually put less than 100 hrs a year on it, so it would take me a long time to wear out another u.c.

If you live in New Hampshire then you have a great source for parts. Most of the folks on the board from New England know Fred Kengetter. The last conversation I had with him this summer he said had lots of tracks. He's honest.has tons of parts and snow birds from Miami to Chester VT. each year.Send me a PM and I'll send you his contact info. Fred parts crawers out like most watch football.I think its more of a hobby to him.Luck,JimAnderson
