420C Carburetor

Post by 420C-Mike » Fri Nov 10, 2017 7:26 pm

I have a 1956 420 crawler. The parts info I found indicates it should have Marvel Schreiber carburetor model TSX641. The unit installed on my crawler is a TSX245 which I believe was used on the earlier MC machines. Is there a a difference? Does the TSX245 cause performance or other issues when used on the 420C? I was planning to do a rebuild and discovered the discrepency

Hi,

The M carb is smaller than the 420 carb because the engine is smaller in the M. It will work up to almost full power at which point it will be a bit restrictive. Just how much, I am unsure of but the difference is 18 HP for the M and 32 HP for the 420. Given the other differences, I would hazard a guess that the 420 would drop to 26 or so HP with the M carb. This, of course, presuming the 420 engine is not worn. ;)

Thanks Stan
It is amazing the versatility of these machines and the 'substitutions" I find in my "project to rebuilt this 420C machine. Let's see: MC Carburetor, 40C crawler links- will see what I find next!

M carb will really whack the power, I would get a 420 carb, rebuild it, and then you will be better shape.

Hi,

I have it! Run the M carb on the 420 only on the Superspeedways! Yup. The exact same as a Restrictor Plate..... :P

probably will eventually get a 420 carb (lots of other items to repair first).. TSX245 used on 40C as well as M so it is closer to my early 420 which seems to be a modified 40C :D

According to a chart that I have, TSX245 was used on the 320 and the 420 calls for a TSX641. Since the 420 has a larger displacement and more power any of the earlier carbs would probably limit it's power.
