440 "power plant"

Post by krusty » Sat Nov 18, 2017 3:31 pm

Hi gang,

My 40 C is running like a top and may actually consider painting it all up next summer.....crazy talk.

Have been looking for some type of engine to run a 20 GPM+ hydraulic pump for my log splitter. Right now it is being driven by my B414 with a PTO pump but I need that back for the snow blower unfortunately. Winter is around the corner. Could buy another tractor I thought or a nice 22HP Honda engine. Tractor would be a waste and the Honda would not be quite enough HP.

Random search found me a 440 crawler loader front half diesel. I think a wood splitter powered by a screamin jimmy would be very redneck! Front half being forward of the transmission. Price is right and has not run in a few years so will have to spend some time on it before I start it. It is complete.

Does anyone know the SAE bellhousing size on this engine? It is not home yet to me so I cannot measure and start the search for a PTO for the rear end.

Krusty

Am in Ontario.

Plan was to use the existing hydraulic pump or get a replacement. Then use the PTO for something else like an large air compressor or water pump.

Not SAE standard as far as I know, Deere only. Not a big deal, you will have to use the bellhousing regardless for starter mounting. This gives you a clutch as well.

Hi,

What I am vizualizing is a 2-53 plus bellhousing and clutch and then the reverser...that being what I think of as being forward of the transmission. That gets you crank speed and the ability to reverse the output shaft if you have the reverser.

Good to know about the Deere specific flywheel housing. For now the plan is just to run a pump off the front. If it turns out the motor is not a boat anchor I can shop around for an SAE flywheel housing for its evolution.

I highly doubt an SAE housing exists, and if it does, I just can't see that it will have a starter mount. The rear engine cover on a 2-53 Detroit is a Deere specific item, not Detroit. The only way you are going to get an SAE housing that will fit is to replace the Deere back cover with a Detroit rear cover.
You already have a housing, just use the Deere housing, then you have clutch controls as well. You have 4-3/4" or 7/8" holes on the back of the housing, and 4 on the side, can't get much better than that. Unbolt the reverser case but leave the clutch tube bolted in so the throwout bearing carrier has something to ride on.

Engine was delivered this am but did not have any time to work on it during the day. The people I bought it from were very nice though there were some language difficulties. The wife said the hubby was a heavy engine mechanic and was working when he parted it out just fine. But to change all fluids etc before running it. Considering they delivered it for the price of fuel 18 hours round trip I would hope he is telling the truth!

I was hoping the instrument panel was still with it but it is gone. I have found the throttle linkage connected to the governor but is there some linkage I should be looking for to cut all fuel just like on all of my other diesel machines? (old school ones anyways)

Will pop the valve cover off in the AM and ensure things are free before cranking it over.

440 was cable shut off, you should be able to see the clamp and holder just above the governor.

I see no such clamp and holder but that does not mean it was not there in its past.

Went to crank it over and the engine is 'frozen'. Not sure what the problem is exactly yet. Started to remove the head for an inspection and once I had the exhaust manifold off I could see a bit of ice inside the head. The head is now loose anyways and will warm it up tomorrow to see how much water got into bad spots and if its free or still stuck once thawed. With the head loose it wont build pressure so should crank easier.

Worst case I need an inframe kit. Well I guess that is not the 'worst case' but now I have grown fond of this little engine and it needs to run for me!

Oh yes, I took the reverser housing off to I could use the shaft to try and turn the engine to no avail. But at least it provides me some form of 'PTO' output. If anyone has ideas on what to do for a bearing on the rear end of the bellhousing pls let me know. I could have my machinist friend turn down the shaft so a bearing could slide over the shaft, but would still need some type of retainer for it to hold it in place against the housing. Then just bold on a yolk to the end of the shaft.....or something.

I would cut the splines off the tube, and have a new shaft made with a shoulder at the right spot for a bearing mount on the back of the bellhousing. You will need to make a plate to bolt to the housing first, then get a four bolt surface mount bearing holder and bolt to the adapter.

Sure enough there was water on top of the pistons and the cyl walls were beyond a quick hone I think. Everything else was in very good shape so will get things measured up for a new inframe kit tomorrow. After inventing a few new words, the liners came out with the pistons. Still need to separate them though on the bench.
