well the real issue here is money? trying to save money with a smaller more fuel efficient engine usually doesnt equate... your going to use more fuel when running heavy. so if you run light most of the time, you can benefit from the small, new motor/ new truck.
but then your going to pay mmmmaybe 4X for that convenience.
a big ol diesel tank of a truck is going to be tough, get the job done and leave $$$$$ in the bank.
you can easily buy the wife a car for the difference,,
but if you only want one vehicle,,,,go for it. a new ford would sure look nice under your tree :P

The later you get on the 5.3's the more power they have. Mine is higher than the late 90's 350's, but not a whole lot. Someday going to do a cam and a tune for the fun of it.

Not sure I would go 1/2, that being said I wouldn't go with an unproven diesel either, the 6.0 Ford's need 5000 $ in upgrades before they are reliable, but the have good transmissions and are in well built trucks, I have a Dodge just for the Cummins, but they have issues as well, mostly front end and auto transmission issues, and the early Duramax have injector issues. I had an HD 2500 Chevy with the 6.0 gasser in it and while it was strong, it got 10 mpg empty. I do know that the new diesels don't get the mpg they should and with the emissions the reliability is down the drain. And repairs are expensive. Just my 2 cents, good luck

Decent truck, lots of power and torque, but I have heard of some fuel pump issues. Other than that I don't know too much about them. If you go with a post emission truck, you should look into the delete kits . I am no mechanic but have spent time with heavy duty trucks . Emissions stuff was a constant issue. If companies like Cummins, and Cat couldn't make this crap work right, I don't see Ford's power strokes or the Isuzu Duramax getting a handle on it. Even the 6.7 Cummins in the Rams has emissions issues.

been so long since i had emission problems i completely forgot about that aspect in regards to diesels....thin i may well opt to choose a gas job...since i don't know squat about diesels....thats why i liked my old 89 gmc...dont need echeck!!!!!

for the kind of money they want for these i could completely remodel the old 89 including cameras and seating in it for less!!! cep tin she aint 4wd

I bought my diesel as a toy, it's not stock but it is incredibly fun, I can go play around and run with Camaro's and mustangs, or I can play with the programer and tow just about anything I want. But that being said if you can tow your loaded trailer safely with a half ton gasser, go with that. If your towing heavy every day you'd be better off with a diesel. The thing about diesels is they are happy being worked hard, and when something breaks it is a very expensive fix, I got 3,600 in a set of injectors, 2500 in a clutch. 1,500 in a lift pump to make sure my new injectors stay happy. So on an so forth. Have you checked into any of the 3/4 gassers? They work well, but gas mileage usually isn't great. Good luck

I just got a new F-350 with the 6.7 retiring my old F-350 with 7.3. I've only had it a couple weeks but I could not be happier so far and at 950 pounds of torque I can't wait to hook onto the 5th wheel and head out to find some hills!

I personally think the 6.0's that ford made in the 2003 to 2007 got a bad rap. The 7.3 that were the generation before them could be highly modified without much though given. The 6.0 was designed to do what it needed at factory settings and there just was not enough cushion to "turn them up" so to speak, which people were used to doing with the 7.3's. I know several people who have the stock 6.0's and have never had a bit of trouble and the one guy who turned his up has had trouble.

Good luck with what ever you decide.

Morning dtoots1,
I'm on my 3rd Dodge/Ram 3500 diesel. The Cummins diesel has the highest torque(what pulls) rating of any pick up. Great engine but rest of truck has "issues". First one (2008 model) went through 3 left rear axle seals before I traded it in. 2nd one (2014 model) had continuous DEF sensor issues and was under a "parts not available" re-call to fix same. After it went into countdown mode for the 4th time I went into I'm done mode with dealer and got a great trade in toward a 2017 3500 4wd,crewcab,longbed dually with another Cummins and set up with the Aiesen tranny to pull a 28K trailer.
Did not get 4:10 axles(30,000 pound trailer tow rating) I think I have 3:80's and at 55MPH I get 17MPG.At 75 it drops to 14MPG and pulling 20,000 pounds+ at 65 MPH it gets 8 MPG.
ANY heavy duty pick up is stupid expensive now days. My Tradesmen(no frills at all) series set up to pull had a list price of $65,000.00 +/- .
When moving my 450G dozer with ripper and root rake installed the dozer is 19,000 pounds. I use a 25' Belshe D.O.T.30,000 pound rated trailer which weighs 7000 pounds. In the truck tool box I have 1000 pounds of tools, chains, etc and an additional 92 gallons of diesel in the in-bed fuel tank. Gross combined vehicle weight is 35,000 pounds and the Cummins with the tranny I have doesn't blink.
If looking for good used I would pay more attention to the tranny type and rating as well as the gear ratios with engine HP,torque, and type being 2nd concern.

So how much power does a v6 gas turbo engine equate in relation to a gooseneck with the jd440 on it??..just curious

dtoots1,
I would be more concerned with tranny and rest of drive train than engine power. A truck isn't a truck now days: engine is just part of the equation and unless set up for towing at factory it may well seem like a good choice when it isn't.
My Ram 3500 is a good example: see ads saying it has the highest tow rating of any 1 ton truck and it does IF you order all of the required drive train options for that.Ram diesel 3500 has a tow rating between 18,000 and 32,000 pounds: all depends on cab configuration, dually or single rear wheel, bed length,4WD or 2WD,differential ratio(s),and tranny(there are I believe 4 different trannys available). then toss in cooling package and such.Even the Cummins diesel has different HP ratings: if set up with the Aiesen transmission for heavy towing it has another 35HP over the standard Cummins(and worse fuel economy).
I've seen half ton pickups towing 32' 5th wheel RV's down the road at 75 and all I can think is the trucks engine, tranny, and rear end are not long for this world.

o.k guys,

lets talk about gearing options on truck..watching for both 1/2 and 3/4 ton. i don't know best ratios 3.73 4.7 ?? what best for mpg and power

What would i look for if using a v6 turbocharged gas job.

And same for 5.3L or 5.7L gas job..

I dont haul my jd440 a whole lot but want to be able to do so with a 12k cap gooseneck.

Unfortunately nowadays there are very limited axle choices on the new pickups, and few if any are very low (high numerically). That being said, with new 6 or more speed transmissions and the low first gears they have, I don't think it is much of an issue any more.
I have a customer that runs several of the Ford turbo V6's. His brother brought his 350 to me several years ago behind one, pulled it just fine, but poor mileage (7 mpg) but that is what I would expect from any gasser, nothing to do with the V6.
