Distance from rear crossbar to center of rear axle
Working in the woods about a month ago, with my 40c 4 roller, and rear sprocket started hitting on 4th roller. I moved the roller ahead to another hole on the frame to get it out of where I was. Can someone tell me the correct measurement from the rear crossbar to the center of the axle. I suspect that the whole side frame has moved and that the bolt holes holding it to the rear housing are wallowed out. As far as I can tell axle bearings are ok and axle has no play. I plan to remove track and side frame and make necessary repairs. Also someone has botched up the side frame where it bolts to the bell housing so That may be wrong as well. However, I can use the other side to get the correct measurements for that part. Thanks and Merry Christmas to everyone!

My 3-roller measures 15.25" straight line (not perpendicular) just in case it is the same - and could very well be.

Don't know if it should be the same but mine only measures about 13". Anybody have a 40 4 roller that they can measure?

Yes I will measure tomorrow. You would think you would see something broken or out of square if roller hit sprocket.

Re: Distance from rear crossbar to center of rear axle
Thanks Steven. The sprocket always ran a little too close to the roller, in fact there wasn't any room for a safety block so something may have moved just enough to allow the sprocket to hit the roller 1/4" would have done it. So much has been modified and butchered on this old rig over the years that I think I'll take the track frame and side frame off and start from scratch. This measurement would help make sure I get everything right. The other side of the crawler is of no use to me as a guide because it has had some rollers and track off a different machine installed which threw everything out of whack on that side.

Almost always is the side frame nuts are wrong, or holes wobbled out.

Re: Distance from rear crossbar to center of rear axle
Thanks Lavoy. You are probably right about the side frame nuts. They just look like standard nuts instead of the tapered ones that should be used. I'll see how the holes are when I get it apart. Does it matter if I use the earlier studs or the later 9/16" cap screws (whichever will fit)? I assume I will have to have some work done on the holes in the frame. Also, I will have to rework the front hole in the frame. Right now there is a plate welded to the frame with the grille guard brace welded to that and just a 3/4" bolt with no bushing. I will get a bushing and repair the frame and brace so that the hole is correct. Any other suggestions?

Just measured 40, only thing it’s a 5 roller sorry it’s in storage and I haven’t seen it in 6 years. Little tough to get exact messurement but looks like 14”. Not sure it this helps, but it was nice to see the 40.

Steve, Thanks for going to the trouble. It's great to have another piece of info for the puzzle. You should get your 40 out and exercise it. Don't want it to get lazy. Happy New Year!

Re: Distance from rear crossbar to center of rear axle
Glen, That makes sense. Mine measures about 13" and the sprocket was hitting on the roller before I moved the roller temporarily. 14" would probably give me enough clearance to install the safety block which I never have been able to do. Just leaving for the sunny south but I will tear it apart when I return and repair whatever is necessary.

You can't use cap screws, they have no taper like the "lug" nuts that should be on there. I have repaired several with the same problem you are experiencing, and it has always been the side frame nuts and or studs along with associated wear in the holes.
