JD450C Track Plate Bolts

Post by joecrawler47 » Wed Jan 10, 2018 3:20 pm

Can someone tell me the size of the track plate bolts on a 1970's model JD 450C crawler loader with the 14 inch wide smaller grouser bars? The crawler is 40 miles away and I can't immediately go check. Thanks.

On a 450C dozer there are 2 options: 1.5" long and 1.75" long. What I had in my hand yesterday to measure was a called 1.75" but from bottom of head to end of bolt measured 1.875".
.5" NF thread.
"Bolts is bolts" is often said. They aren't. Track shoe/plate bolts have a higher head and are hardened after manufacture to handle abrasiveness of dirt and sand.
Had a few machines cone in with regular grade 8 NC bolts on shoes and every one of those bolts had loosened. Heads worn down and I always ended up cutting them off to remove and replace with correct track shoe bolts.
New bolts and nuts(again a special design and hardened) are about $0.50 per plus shipping on the net.

He asked on a loader Amos, NOT a dozer, might be a difference, not sure but mine do measure 1.5", must have been dark or time to see the eye doc, or both.

Hi Tuney,
Not sure they are different but could be. I have used the 1.5" and with correct nut about 1/8" of thread is exposed when torqued. More thread showing with the 1.75" bolt but other than that they seemed to be interchangeable.
Will be at farm with my 350B loader and have 450C dozer bolts in barn and will compare.

There are several sizes listed , serial numbers breaks, non-strutted links, strutted, SALT , and then the split-type master link. Most are 1/2" diameter , 9/16 for split masters. Lengths vary between 1.560" part number T40535 for single bar grouser, 1.732" for early double bar. 2 3/8 for sealed links. I agree with Amos, but the bolt and nuts for the correct application. Track bolt should be used. Take care, Bruce

Morning Btown,
I've also ran into aftermarket track groups: throws everything off. Usually I measure what I need and go from there but original question indicated he was away from the machine.
He should probably make the drive to be sure. I've "thought" I knew what I needed for a machine at my farm(35 miles away) and bought the part only to find my thoughts were wrong.
