450C idler
Wanting to replace idler on left side. mine has two track guide rings, inside ring is broke off in a couple of places, However all i am seeing for replacement is a solid guide. will this still work? I dont see why not.
Re: 450C idler
"Split" type is OEM Solid will work just fine. You will probably find the bolts to be seized. Saturate with your penetrating oil of choice and let set overnight.Tap with good sized hammer then saturate again and tap again and let set overnight again. Then try to bust loose. If it is still tight you can heat with a rosebud torch and that will usually break the rust bond. If the first one snaps off(coin toss) stop and keep working to break rust bond.

Have a B with similar issue (2-3” segments missing).
Any reason you couldn’t weld some patches into the gaps?
Thx,
Darryl

Re: 450C idler
Cast Iron hard to weld, but need to use cast iron rod.
Re: 450C idler
I'm assuming they are cast... Can anyone add to this topic?

Re: 450C idler
My thought is they’re cast steel. I think iron would be too brittle to shock loads.
I was thinking of trying a little preheat and run short lengths of bead.

Re: 450C idler
Highly unlikely they are cast iron, every idler I have welded on was cast steel. Vee it out, weld it back, or patch in, no problem. Bead length and preheat are not relevant in this case, under normal circumstances.

Lavoy,
Thank you for that information.
That’s going to help a lot.

I thought boat ownership was bad:
"B"reak
"O"ut
"A"nother
"T"housand
till I bought my first piece of heavy equipment
At least with heavy equipment I can save thousands doing my own projects or hire out for some coin.

Hi,
In order of $$$:
Boat
Heavy equip
Race car
Airplane
Racing airplane
Not sure where Racing Boat slots in, as I missed that particular money pit. I also never got to Racing Airplane, but a couple guys I raced cars alongside of did. Wound up having to smuggle in drugs to pay for that habit and, of course got caught big-time. Google Whittington Brothers.

Re: 450C idler
Stan, I know what you mean. I was involved in offshore boat racing from ~92 - 2003. APBA Super cat class and then OSS as a technical inspector .....very expensive. It's was said if you couldn't walk into a bathroom and flush a hundred dollar bill down the toilet you didn't belong in offshore boats racing.
I still like working and playing with old iron, be it cars/trucks or the other equipment I have.
