John Deere 350

Post by Keith-OR » Sat Feb 24, 2018 3:21 pm

Need some info, what motor is in this crawler, and last but not least, what things does one want to look for that might need repaired or replaced...Problems that one might look for. Also will the drive plates and friction interchange with the 1010 series

Thanks
Keith

Hi,

The 350 is different than the 1010, so not much crosses. The engine is a 3-cylinder. The size varies from 152 CID in the Straight and B series to a 164 in the C series and a 179 in the D series. It is the same basic engine design used in various wheel tractors starting with the 1520 and still used in a 179 turbo form in the current 5000 series. The early ones, 65-70 or so, could be had in gas or diesel but past 1970 the gas disappears.

The steering clutch packs are Dry in the Straight and B series and Wet in the C and D series. Most are equipped with a Reverser which is hydraulic and the clutch pedal operates a valve. There is an engine clutch only in non-reverser machines. The reverser machines use a torsional isolator which is their biggest problem area. This sits between the engine and reverser and likes to fall apart somewhat. There was a redesign to it for the D series which is retrofittable to the earlier sub models, but sellers of machines usually have no clue if they have one or not.

Otherwise, it is all the usual crawler stuff. Most importantly, the u/c parts are still available for the 350s.

I believe the rollers can be used from one to the other. Seems like, when using rollers from
350 to 1010, you need to alter a little.
