John Deere mc milky oil after valve job
John Deere mc milky oil after valve job
Like the title says my mc has milky engine oil after I had the head rebuilt I've changed the oil and filter ran it for about 10 mins oil is still fine two days later it's milky again. Any insight on my issue I didn't have this issue before the head was done they replaced all 4 valves all 4 valve guides and new springs and lapped the valve seats. I'm thinking the head might be cracked after the drove the guides out or i have a bad gasket. Thanks in advance for your help

I think you are on the right track. I'm leaning more towards a head gasket. By the way, was the head surface planed? Either way I think you are taking the head back off. Take care , Brue

If you are lucky it is a leaking head gasket.A new head gasket properly torqued with copper coat sealant is the first try.If that doesn't solve the problem then a replacement head may be in your future. To maybe make you feel better I have a really good running 430 engine that is dumping water
in the crankcase and with good antifreeze in it.I hope the problem is a gasket but I will do a hydro on the block come spring.Luck,JimAnderson

Can you put some pressure into the radiator and see if it holds?

When you installed the head there is a procedure for tightening the head fasteners. Torque sequence is obvious but it is also a stepped torque procedure.
Ultimate torque(we'll use 140 foot pounds) is done in 3 steps.
In sequence tighten to 50 foot pounds, then 100 then final 140. JD also suggests that you bring then engine to operating temp and re-torque to final torque setting again(in sequence).
Torque wrenches also will loose accuracy over the years.
With the gasket being fairly new I would pop the rocker cover and check torque on the fasteners:if a few are "off" re-torque and see if water to oil leakage stops.
Water side prressure tester would be nice but the kit is pretty expensive (Amazon had several options).

An easy check, a mechanic told me about, was to pull spark plugs on gas job and have someone hit the starter a bit to see just what comes out, probably best to put sheet of paper over openings to catch and review different fluids, suppose could pull injectors on diesel to see.
Re: John Deere mc milky oil after valve job
Pull the head and have it magnafluxed to check for cracks, and have it planed if you didn't before. Reinstall the head using a copper spray of some sort.

What's the copper spray about? Is it used with the gasket and how/where is it applied?

Copper gasket spray/coat is an aerosol copper spray that you spray to both sides of a head gasket and also used on intake and exhaust manifold gaskets. The super fine copper powder in the spray will fill in minor imperfections and help the gasket seal. Can be found at most any auto parts store. Good stuff and I use it all the time.gregjo1948 wrote: ↑Fri Mar 02, 2018 5:12 amWhat's the copper spray about? Is it used with the gasket and how/where is it applied?

Re: John Deere mc milky oil after valve job
Thank you all for the knowledge I did fallow the torque procedures 50 then 100 the 140 and retorqued after I ran it for about 15 mins, I used what I thought was a good quality gasket and copper spray. I'll try a new gasket and let everyone know how it turns out. Thank you so much

You might be getting some of that mess from the nor'easters but when you can try to get a few hours run time on it. if oil is clear then problem could be solved. I would still keep a close eye on it for another 20 hours run time though.
Another thing on old equipment: oil change cycles were much fewer hours back in the day. Part of it was lower quality oils and part of it was engine design itself(diesels ran dirty back then).I change the oil annually or every 150 hours, whichever comes first. Grease everything daily when in use.
Not to rub it in but we'll be back in the 70's this weekend here in NE Texas.Grass greening up leaves popping out daffodills bloomin

Re: John Deere mc milky oil after valve job
Last guy could be on to something, February is a pretty wet month. I'd wait a couple months and see if the oil stays clear in the dry weather. I sometimes get the milky oil from plain old condensation and the engine doesn't get hot enough to drive it off.

Re: John Deere mc milky oil after valve job
I'm assuming the machine was not running or starting well is why you did the head work. After the work, you probably have a bit more compression which will possibly force open a crack as the engine temperature rises, allowing coolant to get to the oil.
