JD 350 Engine
JD 350 Engine
The engine in a 1980 Ingersol Rand air compressor, it's a 3 cylinder diesel looks just like the 3.152 in my dozer, will it swap out with not many problems? The number on the engine is 317DF.
Re: JD 350 Engine
Most of the compressor motors will fit the JDdozer- loader scenario with some work,, first off those numbers you gave don't seem right.. it should be a 3-152, or 3-164, or a 3-179,, any of these motors will fit,, the D just means naturally aspirated,, if it is a 3-179DF it will fit with work,,,
first thing will be flywheel housing,, John Deere uses a thin 1 1/2" thick housing. you will have to swap housings to fit the dozer-loader.. compressors use an American SAE housing way to thick,, the bad part is john deere in their ultimate wisdom makes the oil pan gasket mate to the housing and always rips.. so you need to remove the oil pan and gasket, new gasket, new gasket for back side of engine where the housing bolts up.. oh yeah and new rear main seal as it is in the flywheel housing, and can't be re-used without deforming it.. but is price is right it can be done..
also on some of the newer 3-179 engines,, they can have a different injection pump because they are set to be a constant speed governed motor. set rpm so make sure you have a variable speed injection pump.. I think it is the governer that is variable speed application in the pump.. best regards Mark.

Re: JD 350 Engine
Ok thanks for the info. There's nothing wrong with my engine but I have a bosch injector pump that I have sent to 3 different places, all claiming they could fix it, all have failed, so my only options so far is get another engine or put a CAV pump on it that costs..1495 and up from the people I've talked to. Thanks again.

Re: JD 350 Engine
I would spend the $1500.00 on a pump, if that will solve your problem.
There's a lot of time and work involved when swapping an engine, even when it's an identical match.

Engine swap to correct IP issue seems a bit extreme partner. I know how frustrating (and expensive) locating a good job shop can be but before you do the swap call my IP guy here in Longview Texas. ProMax 903-759-2900 and ask for Mark. Tell him what's going on and give some history on the IP. He is good and more importantly honest. If he can't fix it he will tell you that instead of fixing at it and sending you the bill.JDJIM202 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 14, 2018 11:40 amOk thanks for the info. There's nothing wrong with my engine but I have a bosch injector pump that I have sent to 3 different places, all claiming they could fix it, all have failed, so my only options so far is get another engine or put a CAV pump on it that costs..1495 and up from the people I've talked to. Usually going from one manufacturers IP to another requires fab of an adapter plate and modification of drive gear for the IP. Not impossible but still a chore.

OK, thanks for the info and advice.
Re: JD 350 Engine
Talked to Mark and he said you may have a bad hydraulic head on the IP. Next suggestion: call General Gear at 208-342-8911. They are a heavy equipment salvage yard with mostly older equipment (I think in Idaho) and they may have the correct IP.

JDJIM,
I went by Dogget machinery today(local JD construction servicing dealer) and talked to them about your IP. What we found was that JD only used Roosa-Master IP's on the straight 350 series dozers and crawler loaders(not 350B,350C etc). But you have a Bosch. Now I'm wondering if someone did a conversion to the Bosch back in the day.
JD part number for the most common Roosa-Master IP(several used based on machine serial number) is AR69817. The Roosa-Master part number is JDB331AL2732.
Forgetting the dozer itself and working on just the model/part number for the Bosch IP you have you might(stressing might) have luck searching based on the model/part number of just the Bosch IP and nothing else.

Re: JD 350 Engine
Hi,
Might be. The Roosa on my straight 350 was mechanical fuel cutoff and someone may have wanted electrical....

Re: JD 350 Engine
Amos, I talked to Mark at Pro Max, no luck he said this Bosch pump is obsolete, talked to general gear a few weeks ago, he gave me the guy's number that suggested I switch over to the CAV pump, same shaft, have to move the lines around, this pump came on this 350 the dozer was made in Germany, they are some older 830 tractors with the Bosch also, thank you for your help.
Re: JD 350 Engine
I bought a 350B Loader at an auction for 1800 to get the engine but all it needs is track on the left side, hate to pull the engine out of it, may just fix it up too, lol.

That was a good auction find.A man can't have too much equipment: at least that's what I tell my wife

Lol.
Re: JD 350 Engine
more deals you get the more barns you'll need.Makes perfect sense to me to have a mow tractor,a spray tractor,a dedicated loader tractor, a grading tractor,a spotting tractor... sold one backhoe and bought 2 more, deal on a 350B crawler loader so a man needs that too.Am down to 1 450G dozer but......
Got a garden spot at my factory sooooooo need a plow tractor, and a disc tractor there too.
I tell my wife that it keeps me out of the beer joints (even though I quit drinking 12 years ago)
With the exception of a NH TC55 FEL that I bought new all i bought was used and needing considerable work. Got some seriously good deals and with new 50HP tractors with loaders selling for 50K and up I'm still ahead of the game and have all I need and then some. But seriously a man does need to backhoes:right?
