Leaky fuel injector pump

Post by Mountainman » Mon Mar 19, 2018 4:01 pm

Has anyone had any experience with fuel leaking around the throttle shaft on the injector pump on a 450 C ? The parts book shows some packing. The shaft seems to have a little play in it. Has anyone tried replacing these packing washers ?

I've never had one of these injector pumps off before -- major job????

I've rebuilt my pump, mouse turds. You can remove the cover without taking the pump off. If you remove the pump you want to get all the marks lined up before doing it. Motor needs to be a TDC with pin installed in flywheel and marks on pump lined up, To see the marks inside the pump remove the timing window on the side of the pump. If you see what looks like mouse turds when you remove the timing window, the pellathane ring on the governor assembly is disintegrating and you will need to replace it.

What parts book calls packing is actually "O" rings or a neoprene seal. When leaks show up it's time to rebuild it. New ultra-low sulpher diesel degrades the seals including the internal seals and when those go bad you can get diesel intrusion into the crankcase and thin the engine oil which will result in wiping out the engine.

New seals are formulated to handle the ultra-low sulpher diesel btw.
