Re: JD 350 Engine
Hi,
Dad always had orphans follow him home. The last one was the Terratrac mentioned in my signature. That one made no sense to me as to why he dragged it home, but by that time I had long stopped thinking 'why' when it came to such things.
When he retired and moved, letting me buy the place, he took his 420c with him. I bought a 2-year old Ford 1720 with a loader. Otherwise, all I would have had is the 1950 JD M which was only good for plowing light snows. I made it thru my first winter with it just fine. But, one spring day I came home from work to see a 1968 JD350 (straight) with an outside blade sitting by the house. Say what? I didn't buy that!
Dad pulled in a few minutes later. He must have been hiding along the road waiting for me to pass by. Now, that was a surprise. He had (a) got to thinking I needed my own dozer in case of a really heavy snow and (b) tripped across this one somewhere. Turns out he had spread the word amongst all his equipment buddies and so there we were.
As far as stuff of my own goes, I moved the M and the 1720 to NC from NY in 1994. I also moved his 420c some years later. The 350 was too heavy for my trailer so I traded it for a 1520 I could move. Then, sold the 1520 for more in NC than I could have sold the 350 for in NY. I also sold the 1720 and bought a brand-new Deere 4500 with loader in 1998. That was supposed to be a permanent deal, and it was until we moved to this small farm in 2004. It proved to be a tad too small. So, I traded it in for a new 1503 in 2008 and now that is the keeper machine. Ironically, I am essentially back to where I was when I had the too-big 1520.
Now I am about to get a 1978 350C. That'll retire the 420c. Maybe I will drag it to shows. That'd be a good retirement for it.

Re: JD 350 Engine
My Dad over the years owned 3 440's, one 1010, and 3 350's. My Nephew ended up with the last 350 he owned, I bought it back from him a couple of years ago, still working on it, but I wanted because it was Dad's, I'll always have it. Yes retire the 420 Stan but hang on to it, and thank you, great story.

Re: JD 350 Engine
Hi,
I will hang onto it for a bit, but probably look for the right person to pass it on to. Yes, it was Dad's but I have a lot of his stuff which means more to me. Like the little M, which we spent a lot of time on together to pull it back from the worst wreck of a tractor I have ever seen. Right down to the repaired pistons in the machine shop. I get the biggest grin every time I fire it up. It really should never have run again, but it does. I use it mainly for the cultivator rigs, which is something not found on modern machines. They work great for the first six weeks or so of gourd growing until the plants vine out. We have a staggered planting schedule for gourds so the M keeps busy cultivating for about four months.
