350 B brake band
Re: 350 B brake band
Pinion shaft bearings is my first guess.

Re: 350 B brake band
Can they be replaced without taking the final apart again.
Re: 350 B brake band
Are they under the cap with the three screws. Would they still cause vibration while stopped in neutral and pulling brake lever back.
Re: 350 B brake band
Hey Lavoy, checking to see if you carry the bearings if that's my problem. Thanks Tim
Re: 350 B brake band
Normally in stock, do the seal at the same time. Check the shaft for grooving or corrosion where the seal rides too.

Re: 350 B brake band
Thanks Lavoy, pm me on prices, is the pinion shaft you are talking about the shaft that goes into the tranny or behind the the small cover on the final drive housing.
Re: 350 B brake band
I tried pushing the clutch in today and pulling lever to see if vibration was still there and it was. Does the shaft always turn coming from the transmission whether the foot clutch is engaged or disengaged.
Re: 350 B brake band
I guess I am confused. If you push the clutch it, there is no power being transmitted to the final drive, so pulling the steering lever would not have any effect at all if you have the clutch pushed in.

Re: 350 B brake band
Hi,
If you have a reverser, the clutch pedal dumps the oil pressure to the clutch packs. If you don't have a reverser, you have a standard master engine clutch. Either way, once the pedal is pushed down the input shaft of the transmission stops turning. So, everything behind that is stopped as well. Can't be any vibration from stopped parts.
Edit: Was the B available without a reverser? I know the straight 350 was because I had one, a 68 model. I know the C always has a reverser because the reverser pump is used by the wet steering clutches. But the B? I don't know for sure. Not that it matters for this particular discussion.....

Re: 350 B brake band
Thanks for all the advice and help on my problem. This crawler is a 73 with a straight blade, winch and so assume it is called a reverse. Gear stick is below seat, 4 speed with a reverse gear, left lever beside seat is forward neutral reverse, under seat is two power steering I assume, one for each steering lever. When I pull left lever back it works fine, but when I pull right lever back it has a vibration or like it wants to bounce the lever forward a little bit but is always continuous like something is out of round. Does it while moving, steering, or at idle and when foot clutch is applied I wasn't for sure the when the clutch is applied that it stops everything from turning. Could it be something in power steering now. Hope this explains thing a little better.
Re: 350 B brake band
Still confused. If you have the clutch pushed in, the crawler is not moving, does it still do it? If so, definitely not a bearing in anything, because there is no power being transmitted anywhere.

Re: 350 B brake band
Hi,
On the B, the power steering assist cylinders are being run off the reverser oil pump, correct? Since the reverser clutches are behind the pump, depressing the clutch pedal would stop the output shaft of the reverser regardless of being in forward or reverse (and stop everything aft of the reverser as well). But the pump is still spinning and supplying at least some oil to the steering assist cylinders, right?
Sounds like he is feeling pressure fluctuation in the power steering now. What I don't know is how much oil pressure there might be at the steering assist cylinders with the clutch pedal opening the valve to take pressure away from the reverser clutch pack. I don't have a B manual to go look at the oil flow circuits and see exactly how that all works.

Re: 350 B brake band
Well at least it sounds like I don't have to tear the final back apart now. Stan, I think you are right about power steering assist now fluctuating pressure somehow. I will start looking in that direction now and see what I find. Thanks for all the help and assistance.

Re: 350 B brake band
Hi,
The Reverser is between the engine and the transmission. It reverses the rotation direction of the trans input shaft when the reverser is in reverse. You have a reverse gear in the trans for backing up while using the winch, when the direction of the trans input shaft has to remain in the forward direction (for the winch) while you back up.
For a 350 with a reverser and no winch or PTO there is no reverse gear position for the transmission lever.
And, finally, for completeness, don't use the reverser in reverse and the transmission in reverse at the same time to then go forward. Bad mojo in that case.

Re: 350 B brake band
Thanks Stan, I've owned this crawler for three years now and have learned a lot about it. Took me awhile to figure out how the winch works and only work's in thw forward position. I usually run it 2nd most of the time and use clutch to shift to reverse to back up. The forward reverse makes a squealing sound in reverse and hardly ever use it. It works and I use it sometimes to give it a work out but has never stopped squealing yet. Been a great little machine thus far and has saved my back a lot of work too.
