JD 450C final drive sprocket bearings

Post by Rincon » Wed May 30, 2018 8:54 am

Right Final drive sprocket bearings went out this weekend. Pretty straight forward job I guess. I have a repair manual. But always good to get some extra knowledge. Do i have to jack up the rear area ? and any other inside look out fors would be helpful. Thanks.

Do you mean the bull gear bearings?

I've had the right final drive housing off mine. R&R'ing the track was the tough part.

Have not torn it down yet, but yes bull gear area i assume. Bearings seem to be worn out, lost final drive gear oil when it happened and lots of play in the drive sprocket. Do I need to jack rear side of dozer to remove drive sprocket to get to the bearings.?

You should not have to jack the crawler. Locate the track master pin and position the pin at approximately the 9-10 position. You will have to split the track, remove the sprocket. You can make a special hanger, pictured in the tech manual, to lift and pull the final drive off. Best regards, Bruce

Have a spare master pin if you can find one. Sometimes they 'resist' coming out and require 'persuasion'.

ETA: My final drive was leaking because whoever had put the 5/8 bolts in, didn't torque them. Wasn't their only mistake assembling it but it was one of the larger ones.

I did mine a few years back. I blocked up the rear of dozer toward the center, then split track, removed final drive. Went by JD manual to rebuild, reinstall. Its been working fine ever since.
