JD 450 stuck final drive shaft.. Ideas. New member, Thx

Post by Milt in Hawaii » Tue Jun 12, 2018 8:49 pm

Helping a friend here who doesn't use internet. He's got slide hammer on shaft, all is loose, clutch is suspended, square set screw is out- won't come out. Ideas?

Thanks in advance, glad to have the forum here.

Assuming rust then. Weasel piss and vibration, heat if you can get to it.

Thanks Lavoy. I had to google Weasel Piss:

This is called Weasel piss and it is super effective.
50% Acetone (finger nail polish remover)
50% Automatic Transmission Fluid
You have the world's best rust remover and penetrating oil.

My Snap-on buddy says they have a tool that sounds like it ultrasonically breaks down stuck bolts which would a cool tool but worth more than this JD450 haha.

Any air hammer will do pretty much the same thing at a lot less money.

Sure, will do. Air hammer it inwards a little to break rust you think then outwards against slide hammer edge? Mu buddy is old time mechanic so I'll remind him of air hammer and of course weasel piss.

Even vibrating on the drum with steady outward pressure on the shaft might do it.

The final drive pinion should fall out assuming its not stripped inplace on the splines.
