Hi,

I am not sure any D8s started with a Kaufmann cartridge. Many of the 20 foot tall 'real Diesel' stationary engines used them. As did a number of radial aircraft engines. More of a 'Bamf' sound than a 'Boom', followed by a 'Woomf-woomf-woomf' of the cylinders firing.

I was over in Denton, NC the other day at the big old iron show. They have a 2-cylinder Fairbanks Morse 'real Diesel'. They didn't use a Kaufmann but had the compressed air tank pumped up. So, more of a Hiss-Woosh followed by the Woomf-Woomf. Still, a real Diesel as it has a redline of 330 RPM. They run a wood veneer spiral lathe with it.

Next door is a steam engine running a cedar shingle saw. All pretty neat. Good stuff every year for the 4th weekend. This year, they opted for days before the 4th to have it, with today being the last day. :)

Oh, and radial aircraft engines go Bamf, plop-plop-plop, followed by a big old roar! Gotta keep the sound effects straight. ;)

Edit: and, what I mean by Real Diesel is a design by Dr. Rudy, or obviously a copy of his work. Peanut Oil for fuel is optional.
