Track Adjuster installation

Post by MarvTP » Tue Jul 10, 2018 10:16 am

I have a 1964 JD 2010 crawler, serial number after 44000. The Track Adjuster froze from rust, and of course I broke it getting it apart. Bought a used one from Tractor parts out of Boise ID and I installed it on the adjustment shaft... it was still good. When I applied grease, everything came out of the bottom weep hole. So I tapped the hole and installed a set screw....... then it pumped up fine. Have I done anything that will affect the Track adjuster? If anyone has any suggestions please advise. thanks guys. M :-)

Hi,

There is supposed to be a check ball in under the release screw which keeps the grease in until you turn the screw out a tad. Then, the grease is supposed to come out the weep hole. It is common for the release screw to be removed to get the grease out faster, and good-bye check ball. So, now the grease always comes out the weep hole.

Can't think on any damage from what you did. The original scheme is to allow easy release without dropping a plug into the dirt on the job site.

Hi,

I had this thought that the threads you cut might not be enough against the pressure of the grease if the thing sucks up a rock and tightens the chain such that the safety spring comes into play. In that case it might spit the screw out of the hole and then you'd have the track permanently slackened. And, probably this would occur at the point furthest from where you work on it.

:P

Pressure against the threads would not be any higher with out without the ball, I fit leaks past the seat, it comes out the weep hole, which I'm guessing it is going to do anyway sooner or later without the ball.

Hi,

The way I was reading it, he threaded the weep hole for a screw (because the ball is gone and the grease keeps weeping out). So, I am thinking those threads might wind up being too little against the possible pressure.

It is just me but I think this whole thread ought to be under early model crawler tab. I would worry about the new threads cut in the adjuster also.

Moved.
I did not get the hole threading, makes sense. I would still put a ball in it, and open the bleed hole back up.

Looks like I had better find a ball. I am predominately working in dirt but I will look for a ball.........may still be in the adjustment head I broke, it is still full of grease, may just have to dig it out. thanks guys

I don't know what the diameter of the ball is supposed to be but, you may have some ball bearings around your shop that will work.

Should be .375" diameter. Part number 405R subs to R42849, if you have to go to John Deere.
