450 C Final Drive
450 C Final Drive
Hey guys,
I checked my final drive fluid and noticed it was above the fill plug on the left side. I drained it down to below the fill plug and went on about my business operating as normal. I did a cursory check the other day and found that the fluid was above the fill plug again. Where would this extra fluid be coming from? do i have a bad seal somewhere? how big of a deal do you think this could be?
Thanks for the help!

Re: 450 C Final Drive
Final drive or steering clutch case?
Re: 450 C Final Drive
My guess is you'll have to pull the final drive to figure that one out. Which means splitting the tracks, so it's going to be some work. Probably a seal between the steering clutches and the finial drive has failed. I assume you have the wet clutches.

77 Ford- I am so thankful I upgraded the SALT tracks on my 450C to the two piece master links, b/c of situations like this and your comments, Bruce
Re: 450 C Final Drive
Here is the reason I asked. If he has a common sump and he has checked the steering clutch case, it is normal for the oil level to be above the steering clutch check plug level. In that case, he had no problems. Point being, do you have a common sump. If yes, don't check the plugs in the steering cases, only use the trans dipstick below the seat. Now if he has a high final drive, oh boy, the track has to be split. Bruce
Re: 450 C Final Drive
I have a 450C and the check plug for the final drive is on the oil pan for the gear on the inside under the transmission I think he is checking the steering housing

Re: 450 C Final Drive
So I am checking the fill plug on the side of the final drive (back of the dozer) where the gear is. not on top of the track but behind the dozer. that's the final drive fill level correct? I could be wrong on this one.

Re: 450 C Final Drive
Yes that is the correct location to check the finial drive.

Re: 450 C Final Drive
alright so I am checking the right location. How big a deal in terms of stop everything and tear it down or do I have some operating time on it left? I guess what I am asking is can I operate it as is until fall or winter? thoughts?.... its just used on the farm I am currently using it to level a knoll/mound off for a house seat. maybe remove a few trees/stumps. I don't rely on it to make money. Thanks for your advice!
Re: 450 C Final Drive
I think as long as you keep removing the excess fluid from the finial drive and adding fluid to the transmission you'll be ok. I would guess it's going to get worse and worse as the seal continues to fail. At some point you might not be able to keep it under control.

Re: 450 C Final Drive
I agree with 77 Ford. Limp into winter with spare use. Check fluids regularly, much more often than normal and replace, drain. Bruce
Re: 450 C Final Drive
alright thanks for all the info. My next question is. if I split the track and dig into the final drive, what else should I go ahead and look at/replace? also, would you do both sides? Thanks!
Re: 450 C Final Drive
How do Bruce and i have the exact same post count on the same thread????? Well I'm plus 1 now!
I would just inspect everything and make sure the clutches are in good shape. The wet clutches last a very long time and I would only fix the side in question. Now if you decided to replace chains and you had it off the other side I'd probably dig a little deeper and check the clutches and seals in it.
