Re: Brocken bolts on clutch housing
I'm a huge fan of heat and impact for broken bolts. I'd heat the area around the broken bolt and then hit the bolt with a air impact and then try and use a chisel or easy out to back it out.

I have drilled broken bolts out of the front crossmember. 5/8” bolts, pretty hard. Two man operation. One running the floor jack with my super slow 600 RPM Sioux Drill on top of the jack with Cobalt bits. One bit would drill two bolts; then it was done. All the above ideas are good. Heat and or welding are your last options, once the metal is heated the metallurgy changes and it is impossible to drill. It is a good idea to address these broken bolts. Good luck. Bruce

Thanks for the help. guess i have to try everything from drilling to welding a nut on. i am afraid to apply to much heat on the chlutch housing, it could crack.
but first i have to get to them. sounds like the loader and the left side frame has to come off.
thanks again

Re: Brocken bolts on clutch housing
for drilling hardened bolts I have used the carbide tipped drill bits the ones for glass and stone from home depot start small and work up to size you need

Hi,
You need left-handed drills so the drill motion works in the loosen direction of the bolts. Those don't come from Home Depot, or such places. They never heard of them. Those come from MSC, or whichever machine shop supply outfit you prefer to use.

Re: Brocken bolts on clutch housing
If the break is deep in a hole Rigid (and others) make a couple sets (Rigid Model 10 and Model 25) which have guide sleeves you insert in the hole and run your bit through to keep the bit nearer centered while drilling. Their kits don't have left hand bits (I agree with Stan, I have had many broken bolts back out as I was drilling them with left hand bits) but they can be used in place of the bits in the kit. If you have the resources or a machine shop you use you could make similar guide sleeves to fit the hole and guide your bits. You will have to jack or force the inner and outer holes to line up before drilling in all cases. As others have noted get some good drill bits, go slow and careful. EDM is a process that might work, but can be costly. Good luck. Jim
Re: Brocken bolts on clutch housing
I have used the drill guides to center the bit over a bolt broke off deep. They worked very well and saved the original threads. The carbide-tip bits from Fastenal were ineffective. The cobalt bit was much better. If drilling go slow(RPM), let the bit cool frequent and often. I did not use any cutting oil, lube etc. I did use a bit of compressed air, well before the bit got toasted. I have found a single pilot hole helpful, but starting small and gradually working up has only ruined the corners of the bit for me. The old timers told me the best way to keep your bit cool and sharp is to feed it fresh metal and roll the metal chip(s) out. Good luck, Bruce

Harbor Freight has a set of left hand bits, they are from the land of almost right so I do not know how good they are. Just a source not necessarily a reccomendation.

Re: Brocken bolts on clutch housing
I used Harbor Freight bits to drill one out in my clutch housing. It was broke off even with the housing. I started out small and kept moving up a size till I got close to the threads, then chiseled it out.

@bennyt
did you take the loader off first ?

Sorry, mine is a dozer.
Re: Brocken bolts on clutch housing
We have used left handed drill bits at work in the past to remove broken bolts and it has worked really well sometimes, but not all the time. Dan

Re: Brocken bolts on clutch housing
I had one broken bolt on the right side.
I was lucky- it wasn’t tight and the left hand bit spun it out.
I made a “bolt diameter” fitting with a 1/4” hole and set screws on one end and a long shaft on the other so I could reach in to center the bit and drill.
Good luck,
Darryl
