have you checked linkage worn pins etc?
Re: 40c clutch free play
Pin or bolt on pedal at cross shaft is ok will pull engine next week and see what is going on something inside torque tube at the yoke I am guessing, maybe the clip on the throwout yoke has come off at free play eccentric bolt ,also maybe change throw out bearing while I am in there. thanx for the help,Tim

Re: 40c clutch free play
Hi,
Don't forget the pilot shaft bushing. That might be dragging. if it does, then the gears grind with the clutch pedal depressed. It won't transmit enough power with the clutch depressed to move the machine. Unless it galls up, that is. Then, it usually doesn't move the machine for long until the pilot end of the trans input shaft snaps off....

Re: 40c clutch free play
Could also be clutch finger height adjustment or warped clutch plate.

Re: 40c clutch free play
I had exactly the same problem about 3 years ago. I had the motor rebuilt and while I had it out decided I should install a rebuilt clutch. Being a "newbie", I assumed that the rebuilt clutch would have the fingers set to spec so I just installed it and put everything back together. Couldn't get clutch to disengage enough that gears wouldn't grind. After procrastinating for a while, I pulled the motor and, thanks to the gauge that Lavoy sells, found that the fingers on the clutch were not set properly. Also the lugs on the throwout bearing carrier were worn. After adjusting the fingers properly and having the carrier repaired the clutch would adjust to the required 1 1/2" free travel and no more gear grinding. Good luck!

Re: 40c clutch free play
What is the finger heightsupposed to be,can not find in service manual thanx,Tim
Re: 40c clutch free play
The pressure plate fingers get set at the initial installation of a replacement clutch, engine or steering. Your 40C should use a gauge (JD 7) to set the fingers once the clutch is assembled on the flywheel. Lavoy has the gauge for sale. He posted a copy of the service bulletin related to this in the FAQ section. Take a few minutes and read that bulletin, it will explain the use of the gauge.
