Does fuel filter need to be full

Post by nicoz » Sat Aug 11, 2018 9:46 am

I am having issues with my machine randomly stalling out but restarting without a problem. One thing I noticed is that the primary fuel filter doesn't fill completely (stays about 1/3 full. I seem to recall that when I replaced it and primed it a while ago, it filled and then came out the bleed screw. I tried bleeding it again and it flows fine out the bleed screw but doesn't fill the filter completely. Am I wrong to assume it needs to remain full always or am. I just remembering incorrectly?

Hi,

Needs to be full. Time to bleed it again. If it keeps happening, you need to find the source of the air leak.

Does a 450 have a fuel lift pump to put fuel to the filters?

Perhaps the lift pump is weak or drawing air and not supplying enough fuel to keep the filter full.

Check engine oil for diesel contamination. Those pumps have an o ring on the engine side. They leak fuel into the engine oil; therefore, I believe it is possible to develop air in the fuel system. This type of problem needs to be caught early. Stan can give us an education on the properties of diesel mixed with oil.

Hi,

Yeah, that'd be bad. Diesel thins the oil and it flies out between the rod bearing and the crank and....no more cushion. Not long after, beat up crank journal. After that, the best hope is the thing quits before the main bearings get it as well.

Sorry for my tardy reply. The weather here has been awful and now it's warmed up enough to try some stuff. Turns out there was a bunch of algae or other shit in the tank. The screen for the outlet was plugged up. Couldn't get that dang screen out but ended up blowing air through and cleaning her out. Runs better than ever. Thanks all for the replies.
