Early and Late 440 Final Drive Housing Interchangeability
Re: Early and Late 440 Final Drive Housing Interchangeability
I found out the hard way that the later model 440's use a different oil pan cover on the final drive as well. 40/420/430 and early 440's use a common cover. The later 440's with the different final drive housing is slightly larger and bolt holes do not line up

Re: Early and Late 440 Final Drive Housing Interchangeability
Hi,
Things changed during the 440 run were engine, trans, finals. More power from the Diesel meant more of the rest. And, then they boosted the gas engine as well. Might as well have called it the 440B. Then we'd know right off the bat the way we do the later 350 (where we got B, C and D) which replaced the 440.
Naw. Wouldn't have helped. Someone would repaint a straight 440 and apply B decals and we'd still be finding out these things as we go!

Re: Early and Late 440 Final Drive Housing Interchangeability
I'm sorta in the same boat.. only I believe I have options since I have 3 machines now.. odd thing is, the one parts machine has early final housing, with later transmission. My latest machine is the older style and my runner has all newer... though my latest "parts" machine came with a new rebuilt engine with about an hour of run time on it.. and a slew of new parts... I've yet to tear into the parts machine to see what's up with the early housings on the newer trans... it's going to be an interesting build scrounging from 3.. to build 1

Late trans does not necessarily mean late housing, it could have either. Depends on serial number, late trans started at 448, late final started at about 456.

my runner with locked up reverser is # 452xxx.. but was originally an ICD (currently gas)... it has the bigger finals... the parts machine is #456xxx, has smaller ones.. as does the latest one @ #444xxx. I guess back in the day.. they did what they had to.. to keep em going.. and would scroung ... like we do today.. lol
