I decided to install the Pertronix Igniter, and the 12 volt Flamethrower I had ordered while back in MA. Voila.

Just curious.. was it just a standard Pertronix igniter you used... or is there a specific one? I've installed one in my 71 Corvette.. and don't miss fiddling with dwell and all that goes with points... as I had 2 sets of "new" points not work... and finally went with Pertronix..and haven't had an issue with the car in the 10 years it's been in there... I would certainly entertain the idea of using one.. as I know how good they work...

I believe this is the part number I installed on my 420. http://www.jegs.com/i/Pertronix/751/1123/10002/-1

The pertonix part number is 1123 for a negative ground system. It’s been running perfect for years on my 420.

Sorry, ddaxe, I just noticed your query, tho it was well answered. Yes, I believe it was an 1123, (I'm not near my info, presently) for 12 volts, negative ground. Also purchased the Flamethrower ignition coil, as is recommended. Although I've mounted an alternator, I have yet to set up a new wiring harness, so am running straight off the battery. The only time Ol Johnny wouldn't start, was when the battery was a bit low. Charged the battery and it fired right up. I think my biggest problem with the points system is the distributor bushing wears out. I can find no mention of how to replace it (requires reaming), so I flipped it. No play in the shaft now.

Just an FYI, I saw one of these installed on a late '40's 6v Willy's pickup recently:

I've run an Optima 12v in my offroad truck, and it is an amazing battery. When my current 6v goes, one of these is going in.

Headlight availability aside, I personally don't see a huge need to switch over to 12v. My 40c is probably the best starting vehicle in my fleet in the cold, even with the original 6v system.
