Weighing out options--Which dozer should I buy? A 450, 450B, or a 350?
Re: Weighing out options--Which dozer should I buy? A 450, 450B, or a 350?
I would say the undercarriage is worn more like 130%, or more, given the idler brackets look to be near the ends of the track frames and the tracks are loose. Grousers are well worn.

Just looking at the pics, I would say the asking price is near fair. It could be parted out for a profit, at his asking price. If the finals, steering clutches, rear end, trans and engine are solid/useable, I could make this a nice crawler with a complete new u/c. Assuming I didn’t pay myself for labor, it would be a break even proposition. But after a complete u/c refit, it would be ready for many hours of work. I like the OEM paint. I also like the sweeps. Best regards, Bruce

Yes I agree the u/c is 100% worn. It may be fine for light use around the house but always have the tools on hand to put the tracks back on!

Hi,
Price seems about right as it still moves. Won't know for sure about the main parts until you use it a bit. Yes, the uc is sad, but easy enough to find new bits for. As I say in my sig. No such thing as a cheap crawler. But, you could spend $20k and find you still need to do a lot of work. Surprise! No surprise here. So, that is a plus.

the unfortunate thing is that I live 6 hours from this guy (he's in Fabius NY) and he doesn't know anything about the machine(or playing stupid) so I don't want to waste a day going up there and finding a whole lot more wrong with it

I keep seeing these 350D models. what's so different with them compared to the C model?

Hi,
Not much. The main thing was a different torsional isolator between the engine and the direction reverser. They had the 164 CID diesel engine. That came out late in the 350C production, so not exactly a C v D difference, but most C units have the 152 in them. I think they are showing up now because they are nearing the end of their commercial service life. The other sub series hit that point earlier, of course.
The C and D are similar enough they share their Technical Manual.

now what are some things to be looking for before buying in the C and D models? I seen somewhere else in the board that someone said the bolts between the transmission and motor? and I know this is off topic, but does anyone know on the 450 straights steering clutch compartment if it is water and air tight because on the very bottom of my compartments there's hole about 1/2in that I think may of caused my clutches to get moisture in them. both of my steering clutches are rusted solid and I'm in the process of replacing them.
Re: Weighing out options--Which dozer should I buy? A 450, 450B, or a 350?
There should be a couple holes in the bottom of the housings threaded for 1/2'' NPT, recessed head plugs. Would that be the hole(s) you are seeing? With the plugs in the housings and the covers, with gaskets, tight; they should be water tight, but I won't say perfectly air tight.
As for 350 issues there are several posts on here about them you might review. Loose bolts holding the drive train components together was a main issue, along with the bolts mounting
the drive train to the frame.

alrighty that explains a lot for the holes. the plugs are missing on both sides and when my grandfather bought the loader they said it has newer clutches. I figured that they shouldn't of rusted that badly on me in a few short years from steering perfect to steering like crap.

Dry clutches are still prone to rusting if they set much, especially if outdoors. Temperatures and humidity change can effect even what appear to be tight compartments. The plugs being out would make it worse. Sometimes people take the plugs out to prevent oil building up if there is a seal leaking and letting oil in there.

I've heard also that there's two different types of transmissions and that the FWD/REV lever is mounted in two different places in the 350s. which is the better transmission to look for?

Hi,
Early straight 350 has reverser lever on dash. Later and the B has it on the left box, as do the C and the D.
Straight and B 350 the reverser is optional. C and D all have a reverser as its oil pump runs the wet steering clutches.
Only one transmission, but reverser equipped units do not always have a reverse gear in the trans. Unless equipped with a winch or a PTO shaft from the factory they leave the reverse out of the trans. This, so users can't put the trans in R and the reverser in R and screw up the reverser.
With a winch or PTO running, you have to forgo using the reverser and use the trans R. If you use the reverser R, the powershaft would then also reverse.
Reverser machines use the reverser clutches as the engine clutch. Non reverser machines have a single plate master clutch. And, you would want a reverser.

Re: Weighing out options--Which dozer should I buy? A 450, 450B, or a 350?
another random question about my 450 straight loader. I found a guy about 2 hours away and he has a set of 450b clutches(whole kit). he sold his dozer and wants rid of the clutches so I was wondering if they'll fit my straight or not. he's holding them for me right now but has some other guy interested in them

From a quick look at the parts catalogs it looks like they are not all the same. You can go to https://partsadvisor.deere.com/ and review your parts catalog and the 450B catalog to compare the parts. I might have missed a note or substitution. You might want a list of the parts he has, with part numbers, if you don't have them.
