Issue: have a problem adjusting tracks by adding grease to the track adjustment zert fitting. While pumping grease and watching the track assembly move forward I pull off the grease gun and the grease starts coming out of the zert fitting and I'm back to where I started. I went to the local hardware store purchased a new grease fitting and the same thing happens. The part shown in my JD parts catalog is T45588 "lubrication fitting" looks like a simple grease fitting to me. What am I doing wrong.

Re: 450C Track Adjustment
Has to be a bad zerk fitting. They have a check ball in them to prevent what you are experiencing. Try another fitting.
Re: 450C Track Adjustment
also need to check and see if you may well be to end of adjustment!....how much adjustment room actually left?
Re: 450C Track Adjustment
Regular zerk grease fittings will often work, but it depends on the zerk, you may have to try several. Like everything else it seems that more and more they let grease back out even in regular applications, at least that is what I have noticed. The quality manufacturers, like Lincoln, are more likely to hold than the off brands you often get at hardware and tractor supply stores; at least that's what I have encountered. Looking at the on line parts catalog, the JD # T45588 lubrication fitting subs to # JD10510 "Lubrication Fitting - Fitting, Grease Leakproof". They show the suppliers as Lincoln and Stewart Warner. Research on leakproof fittings finds they have different/better sealing systems and are good for 5,000 to 10,000 lbs. depending on the manufacturer you look at.
Re: 450C Track Adjustment
Thanks for everyone's quick response I called the John Deere dealer for the OEM lubrication fitting for $5.00 Ea. At that price they'd better not blow back after installing grease. As far as the travel of the adjustment I'm sure the 41 year old machine has reached it's borderline. I have to make a couple of determinations whether to do work on the undercarriage soon. The only "pushing" this retired beast does right now is pushing up the horse manure on the ranch and some minor horse trail maintenance work. But every man should have a farm tractor and dozer to play around on.

Re: 450C Track Adjustment
If the track is tightening up to where the tension is correct, don't worry about how much adjustment is remaining. Look at the front idler (wheel) front part of the slide mount to see the remaining rail left before it falls off. Not sure that will make sense to anyone!!!!

Re: 450C Track Adjustment
With the tracks adjusted to where they should be I still have 2-1/2" before I fall off the front nose which based on the rust on the adjuster Pistons must have been like that for the last 20 years, oh well.
