440 reducer
440 reducer
Hi all, I will be taking ownership of a 1960 440 dozer with a 6 way blade and hyd winch on back. It's a basket case it has a rebuilt 2-53 on a engine stand and reverser is currently apart as well and top is off the transmission. I've been told all the parts are there and the books come with the deal I'm just looking for some additional info regarding the reverser. I have been told the reducer housing is messed up. It's a 5 speed trans with reverse so is there a clutch on the back of the motor? Is a reverser a necessity? Anyone have good pictures of installed engine/reverser/radiator/hyd pump? Any and all pics/parts breakdown greatly appreciated! I like to do my homework before I tackle a project.
Re: 440 reducer
Yes there is an engine clutch, the 440 is a wet type reverser, not a hydraulic reverser, so the clutch pedal must be used each time it is shifter.
Is it necessary, neither is AC or power steering in a car, but sure makes life easier.

Ahh well that's good to know being a 60 year old dozer finding all the parts to repair the reverser would Proably get pretty expensive and difficult to find so ill lean towards option b and just turn the reverser into a drive shaft tube.

I just helped a poster here with this conversion. While a reverser is nice, if you decide to convert make sure you get the correct transmission coupler shaft.Do not use the input shaft from the reverser. It will work until heavy loads wipes out the spline. That shaft is to short to last .You will need the coupler shaft from a non reverser equipped machine. This can be sourced from a rubber tired tractor as well as the crawlers.

Re: 440 reducer
What type crawler or loader would I need to source that input shaft from?

Re: 440 reducer
The shaft you need would be in any JD 430 or 440 tractor that did not come with a reverser or live PTO.

please edit your profile to post some idea of your location....also there is available reversers out there for replacement, i currently have one but the one on my dozer currently pops out of reverse position and i just use tranny for reverse, til time comes for a teardown

Re: 440 reducer
I guarantee the cost to ship a working reverser to me would be more than I bought the machine for
Re: 440 reducer
Straight shaft and coupler are not a lot more readily available then reverser parts, and are not cheap either.
If you have not already, get a factory, NOT I & T, service manual, and a parts book, you can't do the job without them.

Re: 440 reducer
I built my own coupler from two side gear from the reverser when I got tired of looking for parts to fix mine. I took the bearings from the front and back of the case to a bearing shop and they located sealed units. there is a space between the shafts and j placed a piece of round stock between them. The machine shop placed a couple of set screws to clamp to the shafts.
So far I got in excess of 100 hours on the rig and had no problems. I think total cost was about $200 Canadian. I tried telling the machine shop there is a market for this, they just rolled their eyes.
the tranny might need new bearings, and I can attest it's not impossible for a rookie to fix.
