40c mystery thing
40c mystery thing
There is some kind of electrical device on my 40c. It is on the right side of the motor toward the front and mounted below the generator. There are two wires on it and one goes to the coil. What is the name of this thing and what does it do?
Re: 40c mystery thing
Is it white porcelain? About 3" long, 1" wide, one bolt in a center clip to hold it? Has your 40C been converted to 12 volts? It sounds like a ballast resistor for using a 6 volt coil on 12 volts.
Re: 40c mystery thing
It's still a 6 volt battery with positive ground.
Re: 40c mystery thing
Does it look like this?
Re: 40c mystery thing
How do I post a picture of it?
Re: 40c mystery thing
Some people use Photobucket or other methods, but I don't know how those work. This site has a dedicated picture server now. You contact Lavoy (postmaster@jdcrawlers.com) to set up an account. You upload your photos to there then you can use the tools in the message box to insert them. That's a short version, look in the Message Board Q&A section for the whole rundown. I can send you a PM with an email you can send your photo to and I will post this one for you if you would like to try to get it identified. Let me know.

Here is the photo AllenS sent me of the item he is trying to ID.
AllenS,
It looks like it might be an oil pressure switch, possibly to shut your engine down if it looses oil pressure or to turn and hourmeter on or off. Is it screwed into a port in the block? Where the wire from it connects to the coil, is it on the terminal opposite the one the wire goes to the distributor from and is it the only wire on that terminal? Do you have to hold an over ride button to start your 40C? If you turn your ignition switch on is there power on one terminal of this unit and not the other? Then when the engine is running does it have power on both terminals?
