Just bought a MC. Oh dear.
Greetings all,
I recently purchased a 52 MC as a project to restore with my step kids. It runs and drives straight just fine but try and turn and nothing. After talking with Lavoy I've come to find out it needs clutch work. So does anyone have any tips and tricks in doing the work to avoid teaching the kids an entirely new vocabulary?

You have some beautiful country up there. I made it to Road America for a Can-Am race over 40 years ago. Cannot help with the MC, need to consider clearing out some 440ICDs

not sure what the MC's steering compares to the jd440ic, i assume Lavoy went thru the adjustment issue and would appear conclusions are needing new clutches and brakes for the steering? I am 76 and was able to replace my left side steering with help from a female friend of family, thou i did rig up an overhead hoist to be able to pick up and turn the final to get off the machine and put back on. This does entail having the machine tracks up and off the floor, track master pin hammered out sprocket off and final removed etc. i replaced all including brake band which had literally broken in two, believe total cost involved for clutches, steels, carrier tube, throwout bearing and brake band was around $650 or so all from Lavoy, do not buy from somewhere else as issues of breakage and inferior products, read up in the posts through-out this forum.

Yea. I 'm waiting for the manualsnto arrive to read up on it before i dive into it. I got the impression from lavoy that its fairly straight forward. My question is this, if the sprocket and final need to come off, could I in theory, take it off all at once. Basically leaving the sprocket and final attached or is that not a good idea?. Also, given its a 52 am i correct in assuming that its a 6v system not a 12v system?

Your manuals are on the way.
Yes, you can leave the sprocket on, no particular gain in doing so.
Yes, it is 6 volt.

Hi,
The M manual shows details on servicing starters and generators. I am not sure if all that is in the M manual is in the MC manual or not. I never had an MC or the manual for it. Deere has a tendency to write manuals for servicing dealers and expects you to have a whole set sometimes. The MC manual might only show what is different on the MC v the M wheel tractor.

Wish I could help you with the steering clutches, but that’s probably the only thing I never had apart on my old MC.
It’s a great little machine to have around. It’s so light footed that you can backfill a leach field with it without compaction.
One thing to look for is any cracks causing a coolant leak under the valve cover. This is very common as I hear and I ended up putting a new head on mine.
Since it doesn’t have a water pump, you’ll see the temperature gauge go up and down depending on whether you’re backing up a steep hill or driving up it forward.
I had to sell mine after getting wiped out in a forest fire not long after I re-pinned and bushed the tracks. The top of the tractor was burned and I sold it to a guy from either eastern Colorado or western Kansas.
I hear he restored it and sure would like to see it again.
