Needing a new air compressor
It's been 20 yrs since I purchased a new compressor. I am looking for 40-60 gallons.
Any suggestions on brands or where to purchase a quality unit?

I have really liked Eaton(now Quincy). Low RPM pumps with good CFM. Most with 100% duty cycles. Also like Ingersoll Rands.

100% duty cycle would be great. Quincy is sold at Northern Tool.

You should be looking at what you have for power to run it, motor size your power will allow running, CFM displacement and max pressure of the compressor head; not just the tank size. A large tank does give some reserve but how much volume, at what pressure, the compressor makes is more important in my mind. A 60 gallon tank with a small motor and low CFM compressor will give you air but if you really use a compressor you will always be waiting for it to build back up. JMHO.

Stay away from Ingersoll, they were good at one time but not now. I bought a gas powered Northstar 5 years ago because I needed 100% duty cycle also. Pricey, but I have never regretted it.

Any opinions on this one?

I used to deal with Devilbiss when I worked in the respiratory business and found them to be a quality company.

IR is not the company it used to be. I had an ancient 5hp Kellogg American, and when the pump died I figured I'd risk $175 and try one of the Harbor Freight pumps

Still going strong 5 years later, and 15 cfm at 90psi is really nice to have.

Re: Needing a new air compressor
Hi,
That HF compressor is fine if you don't use it much.
My application (automatic screenprinting press) uses a compressor all day long. The original was an iron unit, and lasted 18 years. But, eventually it wore out a bearing. I needed to fix it right away, so I drove to a local HF and bought one of these. We ran with it six months and then the HF unit packed it in. I went and got another HF compressor, but it obviously wasn't up to eight hours a day, five days a week.
The next day, I ordered a whole new iron head unit. My idea was it might be a good idea to have two compressors. In the backup role, the second HF compressor has lasted many years. One nice thing is I can fire it up during the work day and service the main one and not have to wait for the weekend.

Re: Needing a new air compressor
I've done some screen printing, and totally agree that the HF unit is not up to that kind of duty cycle. We had a big industrial Quincy screw-type unit to power three M&R Challenger presses and a couple single color clam shells. That compressor ran for 2 shifts 5 days a week and one on Saturday for the 8 years I was there with no issue. My HF unit in the garage probably runs 5-8 hrs a week, and at that duty cycle I suspect it should last me a long time.

Re: Needing a new air compressor
The Craigslist ad is now deleted, but I bought the compressor for $350. It included 50' of electrical wire, so I feel good about it.
I've ran it a few hours since the purchase and am quite happy.
I was looking in Lowes a few weeks ago and noticed the Kobolt compressors had a Campbells Hausfield compressor on them.
