Transmission - First gear blocked

First gear is blocked off on my JD 430 transmission, preventing the shifter from going into the 1st gear position.

I'd like to get first gear back. How should I investigate? Take the top cover off, where the shifter is located?

Removing the top cover of the transmission will let you look into it. Do you have the service manual (SM2019) for the 420/430 tractors? If you don't you need to get one to guide you through the inspection you endeavor to undertake. Contact Lavoy (postmaster@jdcrawlers.com), he has manuals for sale and can help get you the right ones.

The service manual for the 420/430 refers to the 40 series manual (SM2013) for some things, you should have that one as well. If you have a wet clutch reverser you will need info from a 440 manual (SM2023) for that component as only the gear type reverser is in the 420/430 manual.

The operators manual is OMT60558 for serial numbers 140001 and up.

You can use the free online parts manual at https://jdparts.deere.com/servlet/com.d ... nguage=19 . The 430s are included with the 420s in the Parts Catalog (PC505). Both reversers are shown in the parts catalog.

I took the cover off and it was very easy to see the 5 speed transmission part that was worn - M4195T. Item number 7 in this link ....

I called the local John Deere dealer and they said that part is no longer available for the 430C.

Is there another source for parts?
