Straight 450 Brake Spring Question

Post by 450FiveString » Tue Aug 06, 2019 10:36 am

I'm in the process of rebuilding a straight 450 and when I took the covers off to check the brakes and drive clutches I saw a broken spring. I checked the other side and the spring was broken there too. I looked for the spring in the parts manual and think I have found it but the springs were connected on one end by a wire tied around the brake shaft. It was the same on both sides. At first I thought this was somebody's makeshift repair but it looks like it might be from the factory. I can't see any place else to connect the end of the spring to on that end. the other end looks like it connects to a pin with a groove in it. Is anybody familiar with this?

Here's a better view. This is a Straight 450 Dozer looking from the rear into the left side drive clutch housing.

My question is does anybody know if this would come from the factory with a spring connected to a shaft by a wire tied around it?

I doubt it came with the springs wired to the shafts. I believe the original springs had a big hook on the end to go over the shaft. Here is a cut from a 450B Service manual showing the hooks on the ends of the spring. I believe you are talking about key # 6. I don't know what your 450 service manual shows you. The 450 and 450B use the same spring based on the parts catalogs for them. JD says $20.00 (+) for one spring, from what I see. $2.00 for a couple hardware store springs may be why someone wired those springs in. It doesn't look right to be an approved modification to me. You should send Lavoy an email and see if he can supply you with the right springs.

Yep, that looks like what I would have expected and yes #6 is the spring that's broken on both sides. You're probably right about the hardware store springs. I've seen a lot of things on this dozer where someone has cut corners but while I've got it apart I'm going to try to put it back right since I plan to keep it a long time. I've already ordered the springs from John Deere. Thanks for the pic Jim.

If you plan on keeping your crawler for a while, and you don't have the Service and Operator's Manuals yet, you will be doing yourself a favor to get those. Between the three (the JDParts on line, Service, and Operator's) there is a lot of info to help you on things. Sometimes they each have a different view of something which is a help as well. Lavoy can get manuals and there are used OEM ones on eBay. Just be sure you get the right ones for your 450. In case you couldn't tell; I am a firm believer in having the manuals for a machine. Those are the first "parts" I buy if a machine I get doesn't come with the manuals.

I see you are still making progress. Did you get the bell housing holes fixed?

I agree Jim. I did get the manuals for this dozer and that was my "first part". However the manual I have doesn't have an illustration like you posted. Thanks again.

Hey Randy. Yes I'm making some pretty good progress and yes I fixed the clutch housing. I'll try to post some pictures of my learning experience on this thing. I'll put them in the Show and Tell section.

The 450 B manual I got that from is on line and you can download it, if you want to have a copy as another resource to go with your manual. By comparing components in the parts catalogs, you can see if the B service manual might have other illustrations that could help in the future. It is at https://archive.org/details/John_Deere_Company. You should see it at the center of the top row. There are a number of John Deere manuals for other equipment there.

One spring came off on my 450. I was able to re-attache without lifting off the tank through the side access panel. It was possible but very difficult. I am doing a clutch/brake rebuild and found the one that popped off (not broken) in the sump. One other thing, the 450 manual says: "When assembling spring (I) be sure open sides of spring hooks are up". Some of the diagrams (like the one Jim posted) show open sides down. I have an early version of the manual and a relatively late version of the manual (1974). The early version did not address the orientation, the later version was revised as quoted above. To further cloud the issue, the 450b manual has no special instructions. It seems like there was an issue that JD tried to address in one of the manuals.

Confuse? I'll bet.
