450b Undercarriage rebuild and steer clutches
Re: 450b Undercarriage rebuild and steer clutches
I have been back on this project now and have much to post. I will get them caught up asap. Does anyone know the factory specs for the steer clutch disks and fibers? Mine measure .125 for steel and .159 for fiber. The left side is completely different then right. These are fiber glue to steel. I think these are stock ones?

Re: 450b Undercarriage rebuild and steer clutches
The right parts catalog is John Deere publication # PC 1170, by current information. The on line catalogs will also show when a part has been superseded to another number.
Re: 450b Undercarriage rebuild and steer clutches
90% of the new steel clutch discs listed for the B model are actually for the straight 450. The sellers are either lying or don't know, or don't care.
Metallic discs were not original equipment, some one has put them in as a replacement for the standard discs. Doesn't mean they won't work, just not original.

Is there a link to the online parts catalog? PC1170?
I also fixed the link from my original post about clutch thickness.

Here is a link to John Deere on line parts catalogs: https://jdparts.deere.com/servlet/com.d ... anguage=19.
Once you decide what you are going to do parts wise, be sure to check with Lavoy on the parts you need. If you get parts from him and things don't seem to fit together properly he will be there to answer questions to help you. He has the gauges for setting the pressure plate fingers as well.

Ok, so I feel like an idiot. First thank you for the link. I go-to the site. Type in 450b and it brings up. A list of 8 things. I pick crawler tractor to get me to the repair parts area. Then chose steering clutch assembly. It breaks it all down nice... But no specs. Maybe because I'm on a phone not a computer. I've ran into this before
Re: 450b Undercarriage rebuild and steer clutches
Parts catalog does not give specs on thickness, only service manual. Service manuals are not available to search for free, must be purchased.

Re: 450b Undercarriage rebuild and steer clutches
I am set up with both the local Ag and Construction equipment dealers with sign ins and accounts. I decided to check the parts pages I see when I sign in, vs not signing in (as would be the case of someone not set up through a dealer). I just got on line, went to the Homepage and entered 450B as model. I checked the steering clutch pages and got the part numbers for both discs. I go back to the home page and enter a part number in the lower section. When I don't sign in I don't see the specs, at least on these discs. When I do sign in I do see the specs, copies of those pages attached. On the AG dealer site, specs, their stock, and prices come up for most things (and the stock has been right so far, prices may vary pennies). For construction equipment I have to go to an actual Nortrax site to check their pricing and stock, it doesn't show on the JDParts Homepage as the Ag dealer's does, just the specs show. At least this is how it works for me. Do these specs match the service manual Lavoy, or are they bogus?
Re: 450b Undercarriage rebuild and steer clutches
I was thinking only of the manual itself. You are in a part pricing screen, and they will often times shows specs and are usually correct.

Re: 450b Undercarriage rebuild and steer clutches
So thank you all for answering my questions. I want to get back to my Step by step with pics. I will soon have a parts list generated and ask Lavoy about that stuff. I need to search where he's located too.
Here are pics of the right side rails/frame/skis as I
Call them. Finally rehabbed with all bolts tapped back out and new pin bushings installed to secure the front cross bar to them. Your going to go through a couple taps and Cobalt drill bits for sure. I did learn from my machinist friend that sometimes when cutting bolts out with a torch they get so hot they harden and even Cobalt bits won't cut them. No worries he directed me to grab my masonry/ tile cutting bits. I believe he said they were carbon and would cut through the hardened steel. Even though they had the arrow looking type point on them they cut right through it. As soon as we got into them a quarter inch the bolts softened up and Cobalt cut through the rest of the way. So apparently that hardening doesn't go the hole way through necessarily. I got new bolts and washers too. Replaced one lower roller and reassemble back to machine.

Re: 450b Undercarriage rebuild and steer clutches
I know I need tracs and sprockets so I moved onto reassembling the clutches. My friend machined the diameter of the drum to make smooth all way across for brake band to ride nicely. He also welded up the internal finger slots of the drum as they had groove marks worn into them. After welding them up they used some sort of hot wire tool to cut the weld back smooth basically reconditioning the drum. I cleaned off my clutches and steels with a DA sander and started reassembly. I found this side(right) had all fiber disks and little wear on them other all. He made me a set of blocks that measured 2.062 I had to modify them by drilling and tapping them and inserting bolts and lock nuts. I then laid a straight edge across them and measured down to the clutch finger with a vernier caliper. I adjusted fingers by heating adjusting bolts with a torch and adjusting to 2.062.
He also made me new shafts for the bellcranks to ride on as my old ones are super rusty. I found the bracket that holds the brake band had wear on the one finger as seen in the pic. I welded that up and ground back down to match the other side. I put everything together lubing all with antiseize or grease depending. Between that and the little links and pins he made me that connect the brake shoe it really feels nice.

Re: 450b Undercarriage rebuild and steer clutches
I used the left side as a guide to reassemble as it's been a year since I took right side apart. Wow I think the left side rusted worse then right. Lots of torch work and lube. Good news I found the two 9/16 wrenches I lost two years ago!

Will, I think you will find that Lavoy is located near Horace, North Dakota. And Horace is just south of Fargo, North Dakota.
