40c shifter
While working today, shifter stopped working. Transmission was in 2nd and working ok but couldn't shift out of gear. I removed the cover and as I had expected, end of shift lever had slipped out of the notch in the fork. I will disassemble per the factory manual and repair/replace whatever is worn and check all balls and springs. Is there anything special that I should watch for or any special tricks that any of you have learned in doing this work. Any advice is appreciated.

Re: 40c shifter
Unless you are trying to keep it "original" you can replace the whole cover with a "caged" shifter off a 420 4 speed. Some interference with clutch handles going into one gear (fourth as I recall) but reliably finds all the gears, including first!

Re: 40c shifter
As a general rule, what bothers is the "bearing" which is not a bearing, but that is what they call it. Remove the shift lever and check the wear in the slot. Repair and damage that you see there. Check the stud in the shift cover that goes in the slot in the shifter, often times it is loose or worn, replace as necessary. Replace the "bearing" and snap ring on the shift lever. Many times you can double up the snap ring which make the shifter a little stiff, but they shift so much nicer.

Re: 40c shifter
Thanks for the input. Stud in shifter cover looks good. I will replace bearing and double up on lock ring if necessary. I will also check detent balls and springs tomorrow as it appears that they are not working as they should on the 2nd and reverse shaft.

Re: 40c shifter
Found a broken spring in the 2nd/rev. shifter. Don't see any other major wear. All interlocks and the other detents work well. I will replace the shift lever bearing as well. If I use a second snap ring as suggested by Lavoy, where will I place it?

Re: 40c shifter
On top of the first one, it puts a little more down pressure the shifter ball. Just did one yesterday, works good.

Re: 40c shifter
Lavoy, when you say to install the second clip on top of the first one, what holds it in place. I don't think 2 will fit in the groove but maybe I am wrong. Thanks

Same groove as the first one, it fits.

Re: 40c shifter
Thanks Lavoy. I will try assembling it tomorrow. I'll let you know how it goes.

Re: 40c shifter
They can be tight, but never had one not go. It will make the shifter stiff, but it will wear in in time. Grease the cup the shifter sits in, and then grease the top of the shifter ball before you put the bearing back in.

Re: 40c shifter
What's the trick to riveting in the pin in the shifter tower. I used a small bolt as a jack inside the tower and tried to rivet the outside end over with a hammer and drift but afraid to hit it to hard. Don't want to break the casting

Re: 40c shifter
I have kind of given up on riveting them. I put the shifter in place, find a small enough screwdriver that will sit in the slot and wedge the pin in place. Then I bronze the pin in place. Otherwise they just seem to loosen up again.

Re: 40c shifter
Everything back together and working well. New detent spring and ball for second gear, shifter bearing, snap rind and pin. A little tricky getting the shifter forks to drop into the grooves on the gears but worked on the 3rd try. Changed transmission fluid (pretty milky). Amazing how much moisture is absorbed over time. Will change final drives fluid, engine oil and filter and maybe hydraulic fluid and then back to work. Oh yeah, I have to remove the hood and fasten the gas tank down again. Bolts must have vibrated loose as it is moving around and has dropped enough that gas cap is hard to get on and I'm worried that the tank might hit the battery cable. Upward and onward! Thanks Lavoy for your usual good advice.
