Re: crawler points
I'd go with the faulty points. You never said if you have installed new points in both machines that were from the same supplier.(same brand)
JD 350B diesel 6way blade, Case 580B Loader/backhoe, Farmall 504 high crop w/ flail boom mower, International 404 , International 284 diesel w/belly mower, 1972 Ford F600 dump truck, Galion 3-5 roller, Allis Chalmers D17, 1620 Ford
Re: crawler points
both were in machines when i bought them the 440 will not start on its own but if you tow it will start up havnt tried that with the 40 someone has put a 12 volt battery in the 440 could that be the problem should it have a resister or something
Re: crawler points
I would replace the points rotor and condenser on both, convert back to 6 volts on the 440.

Re: crawler points
I agree with Lavoy. The 12 volt conversion probably did nothing with the 6 volt starter on the 440 and 12 volts are tough on the starter and the flywheel. 6 volt system work fine if the system and machine are kept in good condition.

Re: crawler points
The starters can be converted to true 12 volts, and that is one of my future research projects, but for now I would convert it back. If you keep it 12 volts, use the smallest CCA battery you can find in a automotive style, the cheapest Walmart battery cables you can use, and don't crank it for a long time. Also if you change polarity on the machine, you will need to change polarity on the coil, and you need a ballast resistor, or an internally resisted coil or it will just cook points.

Re: crawler points
I wonder if you put a CD conversion pickup unit in, it would cure all points and condenser problems??
They make them for 6 or 12 volt.
They make them for 6 or 12 volt.
Re: crawler points
Tried the 6 volt, they don't work well. Cranking voltage easily drops too low for the system to fire.
They have run for 60 years on points, nothing wrong with them as long as you run good points and there are no other underlying problems.
