Re: root rake for jd440ic
Hi,
The 63 blade for the 440 was pretty much the same as the 62 on the 420. Not sure about the 64 for the 440, but suspect the same as far as a root rake goes.
Anyway, my 62 manual shows one as being its own unit. Looks like you remove the blade from the frame and put on the root rake. Finding one is probably zero chance. Lavoy has seen two, and I have never seen a real one. Just a photo in a manual.....

Re: root rake for jd440ic
Hi dtoots1,
I have been watching for one, as a would be nice to have attachment, but don't think I will spring for a new one. I think that pin on type like you posted, would be more user friendly for small jobs. There are a number of outfits making that type, including a couple in the Ohio and PA areas, I think. For a lot of full out clearing, I think the full tooth type that replaces the blade would be better. The biggest drawback to the pin on type I see is, depending on the dozer blade and its mounting, the teeth hanging below the blade and pinned at the top will put more twist on the blade mounts from the increased leverage. I would be concerned more on a blade mounted like a 62, your 64 might be mounted heavier. If an operator pays attention and doesn't get carried away trying to dig something out on one corner, the pin on type will work ok for most. Just my thoughts.
Do you know if the picture server is down?

Re: root rake for jd440ic
I can imagine the root rakes that require removal of the dozer blade would take time and effort to remove and replace. When a process takes too long or is too hard, it becomes dreaded and is natural to avoid that process. Those poor old rakes would end up neglected and stored behind the barn. And as time goes, off to re-melt with the ironman.
I do like the pin on type, like the one pictured above. Not priced too bad, and looks strong.
Take care, Bruce

Re: root rake for jd440ic
Thanks for both of your thoughts!...i kinda agree with both thoughts, tho i believe that care would be necessary to avoid any LARGER tree roots and consider mostly like brush root clearing. can cut the brush even with a sickle mower but those short stumps aint good for wheeled tractors. that kind of clearing really would only require 2 to3 inch depth with the teeth and certainly not bury them.
whereabouts in the ohio penn area would these folks be making the root rakes...a bit of atrip down to mississippi!!, tho that price does not seem too bad....1895 for 10 ft and mine i think is only 7 ft orl thereabouts if average is 189.50 ft mine should be cheaper...than 1895

Re: root rake for jd440ic
Hi,
I have the 58 420c and the 78 350 parked next to each other and the only difference between the blades I can see is the 350 one is wider (outside mount v inside mount). And, the 350 has ears on it to mount a rake. Sure is easier to angle the outside mount blade v the inside mount one, too.
So, I think if one added ears to any of the older blades to mount a rake, it would work just fine.

Here are a couple in OH or PA from a quick search. I don't know that they will be cost competitive with the one you found, most of theirs appear heavier built. Some web searching and checking around, you might find a small fab shop that might build one for you. USA Attachments (NC) builds them. Their site has some rough drawings and weights to give you more ideas.

Rockland manufacturing is right down the road from me. Their always making really nice custom buckets and attachments, mostly for much larger machines. They set the buckets out in the yard when their done before their shipped. And theirs been a few times I stopped by and looked at some of the attachments. They do a very nice job! And their a friendly bunch to talk to.

Re: root rake for jd440ic

Having recently purchased a Plasma CNC table.. I am going to make my own... though haven't decided on pin on style or stand alone... Will come in handy on my 80 acres....

Re: root rake for jd440ic
It really is not that difficult to remove the blade, just pull 2 drawbar type pins and rotate the left bracket clear.
If I ever built my own root rake it would be of the type to replace the blade, but with hooks to allow it to be picked up by the blade for transport. And a cage on the upper side for pushing brush piles.

Re: root rake for jd440ic
just for info...contacted fellow on c list...says i would need 8 ft root rake for my blade at 1695. not sure i want it extended beyond my blade as no support for ends???
will see just exactly how wide blade is, tho i knows NOT 8ft
