1977 450C trackloader main clutch R/R

Post by B Town » Mon Feb 10, 2020 5:50 pm

Hello fellas,

I have run out of clutch pedal adjustment to maintain the proper clutch pedal free travel. I have owned this trackloader for 15 years. There are ~5,000 hours on the machine. It operates very well, including shift. I have done a lot of mechanic work on it through the years. Trying to keep it a good dependable, reliable machine : complete U/C, in-frame overhaul, cleaned the fuel tank, all new hydraulic hoses, new gauges, alternator etc....

I am planning to remove the engine and remove/replace the main engine clutch. I would like your input into what other things to look for, replace, inspect, adjust, etc..

Thank you in advance,
Bruce

Replace your throw out bearing and pilot bearing for sure and check the rear main seal on the engine. Also the front seals on the transmission. Look for leaks around any lines or fittings while they're exposed and check your wiring harness while it will be mostly exposed as well. I usually check everything that isn't visible while installed. It's a lot easier to fix these things while they're out in the open.
Also when removing your engine be sure to come out level and straight until you're away from the input shaft and throw out bearing carrier tube. Make sure you're far enough to clear them. Those tubes are easy to break if you try to lift the engine too soon and bind them. Straight out and away and then up with the motor. Same going back in. Sorry if this sounds like I'm over stating the obvious. Good luck!! :D

One thing I did was replace the main pressure line that goes from the pump outlet to the valve assembly for the blade control. I found some scrub marks that went through the braiding. It had a chance to rub in several spots and it was a lot easier to replace it standing where the engine should be verses trying to feed a new one through everything later. I also put heavy abrasion resistant webbing on the line and sealed the ends with heat shrink. That should last as long as I am alive. :D
