450 operators manual, anyone?

Post by kilohertz » Sat Apr 18, 2020 11:37 am

Good day all,

I need to do a quick service on my 450C and am wondering if anyone has a scanned copy that could be emailed to me? Neighbor needs some help with his property this weekend and I haven't really done a service on this since I bought it, need lube points etc. I don't want to just jump into an 8 hour job unless the majors have been checked.

PM me if you can help with a manual please and thanks. Even a 450 or 450B would help.

Cheers

Hello kilohertz,

Wish I could help. I only have paper manuals. Loader or dozer?
Best regards, Bruce

Good afternoon kilohertz,

I've only got a hard copy of the 450E operator's manual, that one came with it from the previous owner. If you were to purchase and download a copy direct from the John Deere publication site, how much do they up the price on a download because you are north of the border? OMT71337 is the one for 450C loaders and OMT71338 is the one for 450C bulldozers. Here is a link to the JD site. I've purchased several for wheel tractor and equipment from here and the JD Ag publication site over the years.

Thanks guys,

Well I could buy the download, right now the dollar is about $1.45 per US dollar, so $50 would be $74. I'm not working right now so cash is slim...I hit the obvious spots with grease and checked the tranny fluid today so it should be safe to run. I need to find the temp sender for the trans as it always reads full on the gauge, broken wire maybe, the needle does move, just only hangs around full though, even when cold.

Thanks!

I understand cash flow issues. If I knew of a free pdf copy I would tell you, maybe someone will be along yet. I expect a current manual is 125 to 150 pages, that is what the E series manual is, so it will be a good sized file.

As for your transmission temp gauge issue here is the diagnosis info from the 450E technical manual, I believe the C is the same. The gauge staying full may be a bad gauge, if it doesn't drop when the key is off. The steps in the procedure should help you narrow it down to gauge, wiring, or sender. The gauge (AT37409) from JD will run you about $300 and the sender (AT37368) will be about $60 based on the conversion rate of 1.45 to 1. If you go to aftermarket I would recommend getting a gauge and sender together so they match for proper reading. Mix and match doesn't always work well with electric gauges.

Thanks Jim, that is a huge help. Could you tell me where the sender is located, please and thanks?
it may be obvious when I lift the seat but thought I would ask before I head out to the field.

cheers

I think it may be more under the floorboard, than under the seat, on the right side and down from the top of the transmission several inches. I can't find a picture of it.

I am about to replace my sender. I just had a complete set of new Stewart Warner Heavy Duty series gauges fail by shorting to ground. I have a compete set of new Isspro sealed gauges going in. The sender is at the bottom of the case mounted in a casting on the side of the trans case. I would say it is just about even with the very back edge of the floor board. Just at the lower part of the trans. You will have to remove the belly pan and do the replacement from below. Not a lot of fun... Have your new sending unit ready to install. It could be messy. Check your wiring for rubbing through. I just built a complete new wire harness. And put OEM style abrasion resistant sleeve material on all of it. Purchased from Wire Care. If you end up getting that stuff, make sure you get the scissor cut stuff and not the hot knife. The scissor cut sleeving does not fray after cutting it. The hot knife stuff will fray with a scissor cut. Badly... It will cause colorful language.

Trans temp sender is installed in round cover plate that covers transmission oil screen on RH side of transmission. You can see it if you look between side frame and belly pan on RH side
