10-10 Crawler loader
10-10 Crawler loader
Hello,
I Bought a 1010 Loader off a Guy ..only stated issue was a Blown head gasket. No problem I've done many heads, CAT, GM, International. I get her home and shes full of water, engine seized, water in crank case. Now Im disgusted, had I known this never would have bought her. So I soak the cylinders fir past 2 years....you name it I tried it. They are still frozen/rusted stuck. Ready to scrap her, only reason Im hesitating is the undercarriage was very well maintained/greased, machine is nice and straight, hydraulics tight, bucket is worn but not abused, same as grousers, tracks are 70% or better.
Ive read many ups/down on this engine and Im not willing to shell out 2500 in engine parts.
Looking for wisdom here...Ive heard that one possible repower is: the 1010 bel housing bolt pattern is identical to the two cylinder Dubuque pattern. A donor 440ID will bolt the 2-53 Detroit Diesel onto the 1010.
Is this true? No issues with the hyd pump?
Are there any other JD gasoline engines that will "bolt in"?
If I can come up with a bolt in running engine (doesnt need to be perfect) that I can put in and evaluate the clutches, reverser, etc, then I will shell out more bucks into the engine.
Your help is greatly appreciated with this disappointing mess.
Frank

Old machinery has less contaminants in the Steel!
Re: 10-10 Crawler loader
It has been said even on this site that you can put a 440 engine into a 1010 and it is quite simply false. First of all the bolt pattern is different, secondly, the ring gear for the starter is on the wrong end of the flywheel, so you woukd have to rope start the engine even if you could bolt it in.
$2500 in 1010 engine parts will just be a good start.

Re: 10-10 Crawler loader
I have a 1010 with loader that I have just started to work on. It was a diesel that had been switch to gas from a 1010 wheel tractor donor. It's a green engine instead of yellow. I was told it sat for three years before I bought it a couple months ago. I have found the tracked 1010 gas and diesel air cleaners differ and I suspect the wheeled tractor variety differ also but have not verified. The gas unit exhaust is on the left instead of the right so the hood ends up with an extra hole.
If you try the conversion route there may be other differences I haven't found yet. I'm sure there are others who can give reliable detail here.

Re: 10-10 Crawler loader
The Detroit and the gassers are the same bellhousing pattern, and starter issue is the same as well.
There were a lot of 1010 crawler and even more wheel tractors made, not including swathers, balers, stationary power units, etc, so finding a good used or core engine is not really an issue.

My brother used to restore antique engines. He said warm the engine and then put a big chunk of dry ice on the piston and it would literally fall out.
Re: 10-10 Crawler loader
Ok so your saying that a Gasoline or diesel out of a 1010 tractor, crawler, etc..as long as its in the "1010" family/variant it will fit and work?Lavoy wrote: ↑Fri May 29, 2020 7:08 amThe Detroit and the gassers are the same bellhousing pattern, and starter issue is the same as well.

Re: 10-10 Crawler loader
Thanks for the idea, did try some heat, sledge with wood, lead, soaked for 2 years... I figure those sleeves are steel, not cast iron so the rings would attach themselves
Its a solid chunk..all 4 are stuck. Who knows what else is damaged/destroyed, the crank case was full of water.

Are you saying the two stroke Detroit diesel has the same bellhousing pattern as the 1010 gas?

Hi,
He is saying that the Detroit 2-53 has the same bolt pattern as the 2-cyl gas engine in the 440. So, a no-go in a 1010.

Re: 10-10 Crawler loader
The 1010 crawler and wheel tractors used the same engines, both gas and diesel. The bolt patterns are the same between the gas and diesel engines so one can replace the other when needed with additional changes for details such as the exhaust being on the right side with diesel engines and on the left with gas engines. These engines were also used in other John Deere products so a bit of research could well turn up a suitable replacement engine outside of the 1010 crawler and wheeled tractor line.
