Removing Final Drive Pinion Shaft
I'm in the process of replacing a steering clutch on my straight. I'm at the point of removing the final drive pinion shaft but not having much luck. I easily got it out about 1" but it's stopped and hasn't budged any more. I have the clutch supported per the manual but this shaft has stopped solid. Can't see anything I'm missing. Any body got any tips? I don't want to break anything.
Re: Removing Final Drive Pinion Shaft
I just did both on my 450, mine were real bad, I got a 5lb slide hammer and threaded it in the end of the shaft. Then proceeded to go to town on it, it will eventually come out. It does suck though

Thanks for the reply. At least that makes me feel better. Looks like I'm doing the right thing, just not enough of it.

Re: Removing Final Drive Pinion Shaft
Still haven't gotten this shaft out. This shaft has 2 tapered bearings, one outer and one inner. It looks like the inner bearing won't come out past the final drive gear. When the shaft comes out does the inner bearing stay in the race? Should it slip off the shaft? Can it fall down into the final drive housing? It seems like the bearing is against the drive gear as I try to pull it out and looks like the bearing or drive gear could be damaged if I keep pulling. Others on here say it's just hard to get out and I've made a puller that I feel sure will put enough pressure to make something move but I just don't want to damage anything.

Did you remove the set screw from the steering clutch brake drum that secures the drum on the shaft?

Re: Removing Final Drive Pinion Shaft
Yep, unfortunately I got ahead of myself and missed that step in the manual. Took it out instead of just loosening it. The problem now is I can't get the shaft back in to the original position to put it back in. If the inner race is in the final drive housing I'm thinking it won't do any good to try and remove the housing. Any ideas? I could sure use some.

I don't think your problem is that you took the set screw completely out. I expect either the inner bearing cone or the drum is seized to the shaft, maybe both.
Try reaching past the teeth of the pinion gear with a small punch/drift that can fit between the gear teeth and contact the inner race of the inner bearing. Tap around the race while holding some strain on your puller. That may help free the shaft.

Thanks for the reply Jim. I've thought about tapping on the bearing but haven't tried it yet. I'll give that a try and see what happens.

Re: Removing Final Drive Pinion Shaft
Got the shaft out! Got in there enough to tap the inner bearing off the shaft then a few slams with the slide hammer and out it came. Sure am grateful for this forum and all the helpful people on it. Now to get a new clutch set from Lavoy.
