Dumped my hydraulic fluid, am I damaging my pump?

Post by nelstomlinson » Mon Jun 29, 2020 8:02 pm

I just tore or blew out the hydraulic return hose under the belly of my 450C, and dumped all the hydraulic oil in the garden. I need to get the machine out of the weeds and back onto solid ground. I think that I can back drag out of there with the bucket down. Am I going to mess up my hydraulic pump running with no hydraulic oil for ten minutes or so?

Running a hydraulic pump dry can damage it. I'm not sure if there is a separate reservoir for the power steering or if that will be affected also. I'd try to remove the pump or at least disconnect the pump drive. I'm not sure about a 450C but my 350B has a lever at the front of the crankshaft that is used to disconnect the pump drive.

They stopped using the lever disconnects during the 350B production range I believe. As far as I know there never was such available for a 450C, so you have to get to the shaft to disable it. https://partscatalog.deere.com/jdrc/sid ... gId/223838

Can you see the damaged hose? Can you reach it to wrap it with something to slow the loss? You can/will ruin the pump by running it without oil for 10 minutes. A leak that was losing oil would be one thing but if it dumped all the oil that quick, it doesn't sound like you could fill it with even cheap oil and move quick enough to get it out of there. But if you have to move it that may be the only option to try. Hopefully someone has another.

I would not move it without disengaging that pump up front, those gears have very tight tolerance and no lubrication would kill them fairly fast. Just my opinion.

Jim has provided the best answer. If it's a loader, my guess is that it's the pressure line since the only lines running tot the front through the belly pan are the pressure and suction lines for the pump.

If you wrap the line as suggested, don't move the bucket handle. You may be able to get it out, watch the reservoir level, when it goes low/empty don't run it any longer than about 10 seconds (my suggestion).

Fun fact/Information. Some of the trash trucks run what is called a dry valve pumping system where they close off the inlet of the pump and only allow about 1/2 GPM to flow through the pump for lubrication. When the operator moves a handle the dry valve opens and allows full inlet flow.

Sounds as if I better look for a new pump, or look for a way to disconnect this one. The backhoe outriggers can't lift the back of the machine, so I think the pump is weak. Maybe the new pump idea isn't crazy.

The machine is sitting above a little ridge of dirt and crud, high enough underneath that I can't get under it. I suspect that the bit of radiator hose that joins the two pieces of the steel return line got nudged by a little stump, or the ridge of dirt, and let go. The oil all dumped out in a big hurry, whatever it was that opened up!

Thanks for the info, everyone.

If you know anyone with a Chinook they have an approximate lifting capacity of 10 tons, they could set it at your shop for you.

The Chinooks are based 100 miles away. I'll put out some feelers, but that idea probably won't fly.

Do you or a neighbor have a large enough tractor to pull/push the loader home? If so, one with a front bucket would be good to lift and block the hoe, outriggers, and front bucket. I could probably pull it with my old Dodge Ram but I doubt that Ford or Chevy could do it.

I already have a off topic thread cooking taking those early model crawler guys to task or I'd tell you all about how much better my Ford is than those other unnamed brands....o wait I guess I did

I got the pump off and the loader moved out of the garden.

The pump is right up front, below and in front of the radiator. The four 5/8 head bolts holding the suction hose in place were hard to access, and I had to use a 5/8 stubby to access the bottom ones. The 3/4 head bolts holding the pump on were pretty easy, except there is so little clearance I had to use a wrench rather than a socket. Most of the fittings on the pressure hose were larger than 1-7/16, except for one which was in between 1-3/8 and 1-7/16. Fortunately there was enough give in the pressure hose that I was able to get the pump off the shaft without unhooking it.

I'm going to have to get a couple of larger wrenches.

We took a look under the loader, and it looks as if the foot of rubber hose that is in the middle of the suction line broke in half, and let all the oil drain out. It should be fairly cheap and easy to replace that bit of hose, I hope.

I was going to insert a picture, but not sure how to upload one?

Be sure you get hose rated for oil service. Plain straight radiator hose (not rated for oil service) will work for a bit but will most likely fail.

Jim, that is almost surely why this one failed.

If you didn't have this, and I'm reading the parts catalog right, the part number for the hose is U17214. The description I see is that it is 1.500" ID and is SAE spec 100R4, so you have a spec to use if you go to a hydraulic shop or hose supplier. It looks like that hose is used in 3 locations on your suction line. https://partscatalog.deere.com/jdrc/sid ... gId/260142

I have a 450 Dozer had trouble with trans cooler lines rubber hoses got original from mother deere and it was really thick and to heavy to get on the steel lines so I got return hydraulic from a hydraulic repair shop and was easier to work with
