clutch plate thickness

Post by pastordon » Mon Jun 29, 2020 7:12 pm

I have a 420c with serial # 87937. I have rebuilt the motor and about ready to set it back in the dozer. How thick should the clutch plate be ? IT looks like the clutch plate is new but I do not have any measurement to go by. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I'd re-post this over in the early model crawler section it will get more attention over there.

When I saw this my first thought was engine clutch vs. steering clutches???? But I guess the steering clutches are a stack of disks and plates, is the engine clutch a single disk like a tractor or car?

I checked the manuals I have and didn't find a thickness. I would suggest sending Lavoy an email (postmaster@jdcrawlers.com) to see if he can help you. If your disc is out of spec he will have a new one that is correct for your machine. He will also be able to supply you with the JD7 gauge to set the pressure plate fingers with, if you don't have that tool (there is copy of the service bulletin about doing this in the FAQ section about this, second post down). Better to be sure things are correct than have to split it again because of short cuts.

Likely too late but, I found .330" for a thickness on one aftermarket disc, best I've found so far.
