jd440ic distributor

Post by dtoots1 » Sat Sep 05, 2020 2:30 pm

well folks, happens my wheeled jd40s takes same points, condenser, cap and rotor as my jd440ic, so i had to do an experiment on my wheeled since it has been giving me trouble starting ....being as i have new points in it already i decided to start with replacing a new cap---same result tho it did fire and died, so i put old cap back on and take rotor out and replace with new.....pull starter button, count to 2 and fires right up....

So what is wrong with old rotor? it is clean....did end of rotor possibly get too short? ran fine when parked it no miss, went out next day and no start.
no moisture either.
Just interesting that that can be whole problem, course unless something else show up in next day or so!!

Hi,

Old rotor probably has a tiny crack in the plastic allowing the high voltage to go to ground. If a new one fixes the problem, then use a new one. All these parts are consumable.

I agree with Stan. Tiny crack you can't see or carbon tracking is all it takes.

THANKS Guys,
Both seems reasonable....i would assume carbon tracking from the distributor cap contact as source.
Though kinda hard to imagine a simple rotor causing problem,

thanks again

I had a condenser give me grief. If you have more problems, you might replace that.

With the quality of most modern condensers, do not throw away the removed condenser, you may want to try it again sooner than later,
