1010 gas won't stay running

Post by woodsman » Tue Sep 29, 2020 12:30 pm

Hello all,
Been a while since I was on here. I recently brought back to life an 1010 gas dozer of mine that had been sitting for 9 years. Without a lot of trouble got it running and it seemed to be okay for a couple of hours.
Then it started to run poorly. Through investigation found a warped head and had it ground. That helped immensely but it only wanted to run till it warmed up. Maybe 15 to 20 minutes.
So here's a list of parts I've thrown on it: New carb, fuel filter, distributor cap, rotor, wires, plugs, electronic ignition, coil, and an alternator.
Still it only runs till fully warmed up and starts running very erratic for 2 or 3 minutes and quits. It will not start again till it's completely cooled down. Starts up very nicely but that's it. My other dozers were diesel and I wish this one was.
Thanks for any help,
Martin

Hi,

Man. That sounds like a warped cylinder. Tightens up as it heats up.

Stan,
Sorry, I've not heard of a warped cylinder. The head was crowned in the middle but that was ground. Any fix to a warped cylinder?
Thanks,
Martin

Do you have the heat baffles installed (p. 40 and 41 of parts book)?

No baffle. Never had one as long as I've had it. Do you think that might be the problem?
Thanks

Hi,

That is a sleeved engine, not a bored block, so the cylinders are more like a thick walled coffee can. If the cooling isn't right, one can overheat and change shape and begin to seize a piston. That will lead to it winding down and dying as it heats up.

Heads warp from overheating too, so hence my thought about it happening to a cylinder.

Thanks Stan.
I used it quite a bit when I first got it 9 years ago, with no problems. Just recently sold all the other 1010s I had but kept this one due to it having the six way blade. The temp. gauge works fine and it's not gone over 180 so I don't see this as an internal over heating problem. My thoughts now are that it's due to some electrical issue due to heat. The coil does get quite hot, as do the other 2 coils I've tried. It seems to me if it was a sleeve heating up and binding I would notice the engine lugging down, before it quit. This is not the case as it runs very erratic for only a few seconds and quits like turning the key off.
Thanks for your input though.

1010 coil gets power from the solenoid which reduces the voltage once the key is not in start position. Have you altered wiring recently that may have changed this to straight 12 volt power?

Lavoy,
No, nothing changed. With engine running, coil input is showing 8.66 volts.

That sounds right. Polarity is correct on the coil? Maybe try a new condenser.

Electronic ignition, so no condenser. Also, I got to thinking again about the warped cylinder scenario. If the engine quit due to expansion from a warped cylinder, it would bog down and kill the engine due to tightening up of a piston or pistons. If that was the case, you would not be able to immediately crank over the engine as it would be bound up. When this engine stops, I can crank it over till the cows come home with no resistance. It just won't fire. I'm going to be in upper Michigan and northern Wisconsin next week, so I'll attack this again when I get back.
Thanks again for your time.

Back to the basics? Fuel, wind, compression, fire. I wonder if it could be the electronic ignition. I have seen some mysterious things happen to them, leading to frustration and questions.

Best regards, Bruce

Coil should not be hot. Again, is polarity correct on the coil? Did you replace with a coil you know to be suitable for use with the electronic ignition system?

Not totally related but I had a chain saw that did exactly what is happening to you. When cold, started right up and ran great, for about 5 minutes. Then, just dead.

It was the electronic ignition.

The engine was acting up the same before the addition of the electronic ignition. I believe polarity is correct but will double check. The coil is the one I bought when changing the points, distributor cap and rotor, so it may be the wrong coil for electronic ignition. I checked the timing yesterday and it was dead on. When I get back from out west on the 13th, I'll get a proper coil and check the polarity.
Thanks guys,
Martin
