350B quit running

Post by timmtnman » Fri Oct 16, 2020 1:38 pm

I was working working it today and was getting ready to come off the mountain. I had parked it for a minute and when I climbed back on it just quit running and wouldn't do anything. What are some things to look for. First time it's done this since I have owned it. Thanks

Fuel tank vent, obstruction in the fuel tank itself, air leak in a line somewhere.

Thanks Lavoy, but it has lost power somehow. The starter doesn't turn over at all and I dont see the guages move when you turn the switch on. What wire or wires would cause it to quit all of a sudden with it running.

Use a voltmeter to check to see that you have power as you progress along. Start at the battery(s) an be sure the battery(s) haven't failed. Check the cable ends, battery posts, and ground cable attachment. Does your have the battery master switch in the battery box? I had seen those fail, try bypassing it, if you have one. Check the battery cable connection at the starter solenoid. I believe you have a circuit breaker inside the dash console that supplies the ignition switch and some other things if that failed your switch won't work. A broken wire between the starter solenoid battery cable post and the dash will take everything out as far as switches working.

A short cut would be to try jumping from the solenoid battery post to the start terminal on the solenoid. Before trying this be sure the transmission is in neutral. If it turns over doing that the problem is likely between the starter and dash.

That some possibilities.

Check the bulkhead connector where your wiring harness from the engine compartment comes through to the dash panel. They are notorious for coming just loose enough to let you loose everything like you did. If that checks out okay then look at your battery ground in the battery box. If it has never been changed over the years the ground strap will loose its connection where it bolts to the battery box. Also the box itself will loose its ground through to the rest of the machine.

Sorry, missed that. I agree on the wiring harness connector as a possible source.

Thanks for the advice on those things. First thing I checked was the battery. Read 2.7 volts, then checked the cut off switch and it read the same on both terminals. That's as far as I got with it today. Thinking the battery went bad or alternator went bad. I will check the wiring harness connector when I go back with a new battery.

Hi,

2.7 V is way low. I am betting on a bad battery.

I just had one go a week ago in the Gator. It fired up, moved to where the wife was picking stuff up, she hit the key and a big old clunk from in back. Like the engine tossed out a rod. Nope. The starter engaged and began the turn over and then the battery left town for a trip to the beach. Oddly, it read 9.3 V until I hit the key again and then it read 2.2 V. Oh. One good cell left.... :P

New battery fixed it right on up. :)

I put a new battery in and fired right up. I charged the other battery all night and only read 7 volts today. Thanks for all of the advice.

It happens. Several years ago at work I had parked my pickup after running an errand and all was fine. A couple hours later I had to go pick up some piping parts for the crew, got in the truck and absolutely nothing. Borrowed a voltmeter and checked the battery - no voltage at all. Luckily I was working at a mill near the house and I had my wife pick me up and take me to the parts store (and to get the parts for the crew). New battery and all was fine. The old one looked fine, but had to have broken a connection inside the case, no warning at all.

Hi,

Yep. That is what happened to the Gator battery. Starter load popped an internal connection.

Vibration tends to do that as well. But, where would we get vibration from with a crawler? :P
