420c right steering issue
420c right steering issue
can someone steer (haha) me in the rite direction . i have picked up a 57 420c with rt steering issues .. adjusted throw out bearing. pull outer case off and reviewed discs , cleaned and reassembiled . still same issue .. put into a pile of dirt . only getting drive off left track .. new to the crawlers .. could this problem be in final drive assembly .. Thanks to all ..454BBGB.
Lavoy is probably going to be your best source of info on this one but it could be a few different things. Did you adjust the steering clutch pressure plate using a JD-7 pressure plate gauge? Could be the levers are pressed in enough to release the clutch due to wear.
The final drive could have a stripped pinion or worse but it seems like you'd notice it from all the parts in the final drive making bad noises.
I'd bet on the clutches but Lavoy has seen hundreds to the two I've had apart.

Bill pretty much hit all of them, might add stripped splines in rear end. Look to the clutches first. Pull the little top cover on the clutch housing and leave it off. Work the crawler, and see if the brake drum is turning when that side quits driving. If it does, it is in the clutch area somewhere. If not, it is in the final somewhere.

I said this wrong, Don caught it.
If the drum turns, then it is a final drive problem, if it does not, it is clutch or splines problem.

Lavoy, If the brake drum is not turning when a track quits pulling, indicates slipping clutches or splines, not final drive problems, correct me if i am wrong, it happens all the time. Don

Donol60,
You and Lavoy are saying the same thing. The drum is attached directly to the pinion shaft of the final drive. If the drum is turning but the final drive isn't, it's pretty much got to be in the final drive. If the drum isn't turning, either the clutch has to be slipping or the spline in the transmission output is stripped.

Lavoy, says, (quote ) see if drum is turning when that side quits driving------if it does ( turn ) it is in the clutch area somewhere- ----- ( end of quote ) Here is where i disagree, if the drum is turning the clutch IS NOT the problem area. Don
