1973 450B pto
Hey guys, i was running my 450b today for about 3 hours. After i finished, i went and checked the pto shaft because i put a new seal in it. And boy it was hot. I mean hot hot, couldn't touch it hot. This cant be normal can it?
Re: 1973 450B pto
No dude that aint normal. I suspect you have a bearing going bad or your shaft is biding up. I wouldn't run the pto until you can figure out what's going on.

Thats what i was thinking, problem is, i cant turn it off.
If i can figure out how to disengage it, i will. Hopefully i dont have to pull the front cover off.

Well... it will mean you'll have to drain the transmission oil but you can pull the shaft from the rear of the machine. I would suspect it will be the bearing there at the rear of the PTO shaft that is bad anyway. Those bearings can be an issue. I have also ran into where the shaft will get bent slightly and cause the bearings to go bad. Usually with that condition you will have a bad vibration as well.

Can i change that rear bearing from the rear of the machine? Ill take a look at it this evening.
Can i pull the shaft out and leave it out. Maybe weld up the housing?

Back the rear of the tracks onto a RR tie or equivalent. This will help shift your oil forward away from the three bolt plate that holds the shaft/bearing. I sourced a bear plate with no shaft provisions from a breaker. This way I can pull the shaft with cover and replace the opening in the rear of the case with the proper plate.
