Hi,
Sorry. I missed this, and for a whole month to boot.
I have a Patu, made in Finland of all places, but it was what my local dealer carries. It'll take 4" OK, 5" if you slow down the feed to minimum. It has a hydraulic feed, which is great - no wrestling with the stuff. I use it on my JD 4500.
The thing is built heavy enough, almost too heavy. It actually doesn't like the little stuff but it whacks up the the larger stuff nicely. So, I have a low spot, a pit really, where I dump the finer stuff to rot into compost. I use the 420c to mash it down. I use the chipper for larger stuff, and dump the chips into the same pit. Makes nice compost.

Hi,
I have the DC-40 with hydraulic feed. It's rated at 4", but one can get closer to 5" thru it if it's soft wood like pine. I thought about the DC-60, but felt that I'd be OK with the 40 and probably didn't have enough tractor to run the 60 anyway. Plus, I did save a couple thousand bucks.
As far as the tractor size goes, I can tell you that when I get a large piece into the thing, I barely have enough tractor to handle it. The governor goes wide open and the thing vibrates the whole rig. The 4500 is 40+ HP, so you might have some more thinking to do when deciding on a chipper size to fit the Ford.
In fact, I had to make up some extra brackets for the rear hydraulic lines on the 4500. The vibration kept chewing up the o-rings at the valve end even though the nuts were tight. The lines flexed a bit too much as they were held at the connector end by a bracket, but that was all - no other brackets until the steel lines connect to the valve body. It was an easy fix as there were plenty of handy spots to anchor the new brackets to.
It's something that isn't really a fault of the tractor design. I don't think most folks use drive motors for chippers on the rear remote. As the chipper blades get into their work, they push back on the wood and that sets up pressure pulses in the lines, which is what moved the lines around like that.
And you really do want to have the hydraulic feeder option, trust me. Years ago I had a Ford 1720 with a 3" manual feed chipper and it was like wrestling with a bear to use the fool thing.
