John Deere 440IC Reverser
I know this topic has been discussed on this forum before but I could not find results for the same issue I’m having, sorry in advance if I’m repeating questIons. The reverser was working fine yesterday, I backed the dozer in and shut it down, when I started it to pull it forward the engine stalls immediately when I put the reverser in forward and let the clutch out. Is there any hope of fixing this without a teardown? I plan on flushing the reverser, filling with new oil and running through the adjustment procedure unless you all think that’s pointless. Any help, suggestions, or support is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Seth
Thanks,
Seth

Re: John Deere 440IC Reverser
It miraculously started working so now I’m really afraid. It snaps in but not the 20lb force like it’s supposed to be. It has been whining more than normal lately.
Re: John Deere 440IC Reverser
If the engine stalls in forward, highly likely is it input shaft bearing in the transmission. There is nothing in the reverser that can create drag in forward realistically. I would stop using the crawler immediately, and start the tear down. Running it will just add amount of money that will be needed to fix it.

That’s not what I wanted to hear, but I guess I have no choice but to fix it. Thanks for the replies.

Would it be easier to remove the transmission instead? We rebuilt the reverser, engine and installed a new main clutch a few years back. As it sits now the tracks are off and one final drive removed.

Hi,
Unfortunately, no. The transmission is the central piece. To get it out, everything has to be removed. Engine, reverser, both finals and anything which might be on the rear (winch, 3pt).
Since we are thinking input shaft bearing, pull the engine and the reverser and you can leave the finals on.

Is there any way to check this bearing before disassembly?

Pull the shifter on your transmission and then check for wear and movement. The tranny can come out form the back, did so on my own ICD which had a bad second gear.

You all were right. Input shaft bearing is loose. Started tearing it down tonight, should be able to remove transmission tomorrow evening.

Re: John Deere 440IC Reverser
What is the thin metal sleeve that slides over the spline and inside the steering clutch throw out bearing for?
Re: John Deere 440IC Reverser
Believe you are talking about the throwout bearing carrier...t/o rides on that for steering clutch..also be sure and set the pressure plate with the jd7 gauge
Re: John Deere 440IC Reverser
Throwout tube, it is what the throwout bearing carrier rides on.

How many thousandths of shims does it normally take to shim the final drive output shaft?
